Elena Baltacha, Melanie South, Katie O'Brien and Naomi Cavaday are all into the qualifying draw for the US Open in New York.
Baltacha, seeded 25 in the qualifying event, faces Anna Korzeniak in the opening round:

1R - Anna Korzeniak 7-6[7] 5-7 6-0
2R - Carly Gullickson 6-1 6-7[2] 6-2

3R - Julie Coin 7-5 2-6 7-6[4]

South (Britain's number 3 player), seeded 27, opens up against Italian Alberta Brianti:
1R - Alberta Brianti 6-2 3-6 6-3
2R - Youlia Fedossova 6-3 4-6 7-6[6]

3R - Shuai Zhang 7-6[2] 6-2

Katie O'Brien, the 29th seed in the qualifying draw, plays Petra Martic in the first round:
1R - Petra Martic 3-6 6-4 6-0
2R - Alexa Glatch 6-3 6-4
3R - Nina Bratchikova

Finally, Britain's number 5 player Naomi Cavaday, unseeded in the qualifying draw, opens against wildcard Kristina Kucova:
1R - Kristina Kucova[WC] 1-6 6-3 6-1
2R - Mathilda Johansson[2]
3R - Anastasia Pivovarova

Unfortunately, due to the four losses above, Britain's hopes now lie on Anne Keothavong, who has gained direct entry into the main draw. Both Baltacha and South, who had a good chance of a main draw place, narrowly lost in the final round of qualifying yesterday.
Keothavong, unseeded in the main draw, will play qualifier Alexa Glatch in round 1, who knocked out Katie O'Brien in the qualifying draw:

1R - Alexa Glatch[Q] 6-2 6-2
2R - Francesca Schiavone[25] 6-2 3-6 6-4

3R - Elena Dementieva[5] 6-3 6-4
4R - Na Li
QF - Svetlana Kuznetsova[3]
SF - Jelena Jankovic[2]
F - Serena Williams[4]

Real shame about Baltacha and South not being able to go that one step further to get into the main draw, so its Anne flying the flag on the womens side and so far so good in her first main draw match at the US Open, always tricky playing qualifiers because they have matches under their belt that you dont but a good win none the less and now for the tough task of Schiavone.

A good win for Keothavong in the first round, especially since Glatch had beaten Katie O'Brien in qualifying.
Schiavone is a tough opponant for Anne but I definately think the Brit has a chance of winning.

Edit: Anne is leading against Francesca Schiavone, the number 25 seed. Current score: 6-2 3-6 1-0 (A-40). Hopefully Anne can convert this break point.

Anne is unable to convert the break-point in the second game of the final set but is still in this match. 1-1 in the third set.

Anne recovers from a break down in the final set (*2-4) to take the match 6-2 3-6 6-4, winning the last four games. A great win for the Brit against a former top-15 player. Hopefully Anne can continue her good run, despite her third round opponant most likely being Dementieva (Olympic gold medalist 2008). Again though, this is a match-up that Keothavong can make very competitive. I would rather her play someone like Dementieva than Serena or Venus Williams.
Even if she were to lose this match this will have been her best grand slam performance to date, at a slam other than Wimbledon that she is playing in for the first time. This will surely inspire the other top British women to get inside the top 100.
Anne will take at least 90 ranking points from this fortnight which will push her to a career-high ranking, potentially within the top 70, which will be another key milestone reached.

Brilliant win and a gutsy win cause she could of easy of folded after dropping the second set and then after being a break down in the final set but this is a great achievement for Anne who to be fair hasnt been playing very well of late but this is very good run she is putting on here and she goes into the match with the olympic champion with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Do you best Anne and congratulations for what you have already achieved

She's also the first British woman to get through to the third round of the US Open since Jo Durie in 1991 (I think!)

What i do know is that its been a very very long time. There has only been two instances that I can think of where a british women has reached the 3rd round of a slam. Anne this year at the US and Elena Baltacha at the Australian Open a couple of years ago
