Hantuchova ousts former No. 1 Safina in opening round

By Erin Bruehl
Monday, August 30, 2010
Dinara Safina entered the 2009 US Open as the world No. 1 and tournament's top seed, although she was upset in just the third round.

Much has changed one year later, as a back injury forced Safina to retire from her fourth round match at the 2010 Australian Open, kept her off the WTA Tour until April, and prevented her from competing at Wimbledon.

She has struggled since her return to competition, falling out of the top 60 in the world at one point, and entered the 2010 US Open ranked No. 50 and drawing a seeded player, No. 24 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in the first round.

Safina suffered another early round loss, going down early against Hantuchova, 6-3, 6-4.

It was the second meeting between the two players in less than a week, as they met in the Pilot Pen in New Haven, which was a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 second round victory for Safina.

Hantuchova outplayed Safina in the first set, as the Russian struggled serving, hitting many first serves below 80 mph. Hantuchova was up 5-1 when Safina started a mini-comeback to bring the set to 5-3, but after holding two break points in the next game, she could not convert to give the set to the Slovakian. For the first set, Hantuchova hit 13 winners to just three for Safina.

Safina's level of play improved in the second set as she hit her shots harder and found more spots, including hitting 15 winners. After trading breaks in the first two games, the set progressed on serve until the seventh game when Hantuchova scored what would be the decisive break to go up 4-3.

Safina did not go down without a fight, as Hantuchova served for the match at 5-4 and was down 15-40, but the Russian could not convert. She hit a return wide and then Hantuchova brought the game to deuce with a volley winner as she dictated the entire point. She followed with a key-107 mph ace to set up match point and closed it out when Safina hit a return past the baseline.

Hantuchova next faces an American in the second round in either Vania King or Christina McHale.

Match Facts

- Daniela Hantuchova reached the fourth round of the 2010 US Open.

- Daniela Hantuchova hit 24 winners and had 28 unforced errors whlie Dinara Safina had 18 winners and 31 unforced errors.

:D reached the fourth round

that's a good sign I think.
Daniela is probably the only player who can reach the 2nd tournament week already on day one

I just saw the final 4 games of the match and I gotta say Im pleased with Daniela. I know she had her up and downs, and that her W-UE ratio was negative, but her ballstriking showed confidence and her backhand was very solid (very nice net approach percentage too, using her talents!).

It was an encouraging performance because it showed confidence, and it is a night-day difference when we get tentative-daniela over confident-daniela :?

I hope she can keep this mindset and cut down on those silly lapses, because Vania is a tough cookie.

Good luck, danka :)

ps: I don't get people saying Ana looks better on this outfit than danka. On daniela it has a nice siloutte, on Ana, well, it doesn't. Still, a pretty weird choice of colors from Adidas.

Very impressed with Daniela on Monday. I caught the back end of set two and was very pleased with what I saw. There were the usual wobbles and near breaks but she done what was needed, made even more impressive considering that she lost to Safina last time out. I won't be able to catch any of tonights match as I'm at a random football match but hopefully I'll come home to find Daniela in the third round.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D  I LOVE Dani's play when she comes to the net.

Big chance for fourth round.

At the moment she can beat the three Stosur, Dementieva and Kleybanova. They are out of form you know? :o  Kleybanova is fat
