Good article on Victoria Azarenka.

thank you very much

Vika has just won Miami. I am happy about that, though, it wasn't a good match. I had expected more, but no long rallies, few ventures to the net. Vika had a great winner when running to her forehand side and hitting it down-the-line, and then they had a fun rally with both players at the net, but other than that, it was mostly Serena hitting errors.

It's been an amazing run for Azarenka this year. She had never even been in an important WTA final before this year and now she has three titles (and two doubles titles). What's depressing is that it's still very clear that the media has little desire to try and make her a new star. The commentary on CBS was very Serena-centric, pushing Azarenka to the background. They almost made it out that this was a "Serena slipped on a banana peel and lost in a fluke way, but we all know she's way way better than what's her name." The headline on the NBC story covering this is "Serena Williams upset in Key Biscayne final." Azarenka's name is not even mentioned in the first paragraph of the AP story covering the match. To most of the establishment media covering tennis (maybe not the hardcores covering it on the internet), there's an elite club of real stars and everyone else. And unless your name is Williams, Sharapova or Ivanovic (maybe Jankovic), you aren't in it.

I agree with you to an extent, but ESPN has a 'top stories' bulletin that does support Azarenka:

"Coming out party... Victoria Azarenka has our attention. The teenage phenom played peerless tennis and destroyed two-time defending champion Serena Williams 6-3, 6-1 in the Sony Ericsson Open final."

A big result for 14-year-old wild-card Madison Keys today; defeated Alla Kudryavtseva (who beat Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon last year) in straight sets, 7-5 6-4, at The MPS Group Championships in Ponte Vedra Beach.

yup, good for tennis and especially US tennis with a new hope. And I like the way she looks. She says her favorite surface is clay. Tennis in the US has lost a lot of its popularity with the decline in top players and loss of tournaments. Personally I hope this girl (or Coco or whoever soon) can step it up and get tennis back on track in the States.

Is that because Serena's not entering Charleston and won't defend her points?

last year Charleston was worth around 800 points, this year only 470, so even if Serena would win Charleston she would lose 330+ points. She could have maintained the number 1 ranking by winning both Marbella and Charleston, but as she lost R1 in Marbella, she will not be able to keep a lead over Safina

Thanks Christina for the comfirmation. That kinda sucks that Charleston got down-graded...Safina as no.1-just doesn't seem right...mind you Safina's got a hell of a lot of points to defend coming up...

feels a bit weird because Serena has won 2 slams and reached the final of a 3rd and also final of Miami. But outside these tournaments Serena hasn't performed really well. Safina has 2 slam finals, and a lot of tier I titles. She's been really good at all tournaments.

In a way Safina deserves the number-1 spot because she has won so many matches, won back-to-back titles during the US Open series which was impressive, and made two slam finals, which not many players manage. But its Serena that has won two slams, and made another slam final, so in that sense she is more deserving of the number 1 ranking.
It doesn't matter too much though because Safina has way to many points to defend over the coming tournaments to hold on to the top-spot for more than a few weeks, and I'm fairly sure that after Roland Garros Serena will regain the world number 1 spot.

The drawsheet shows 430 points for the winner of Charleston 2008. Did this go up to around 800 because of the change in ranking points system from 2008 to 2009?

all 2008 points were doubled during the first week of January to be more close to the 2009 points, so Serena will lose 860 points.
