Daniela's one of the lowest ranked players in qualifying so it's going to be tough. There are a lot of good players in the draw and pretty much every one of the players here are better than anyone she beat in Katowice and clay hasn't been a good surface for Daniela recently. We'll see what the draw's like and hopefully Daniela can get a decent first round and take things from there.

Daniela faces Naomi Osaka. I was hoping she would get Kanepi, since she's in a similar downward spiral and is a familiar foe.

After reading up on Osaka, now I really wish Dani was playing Kanepi. Serena has called her very dangerous. Some say she's almost as hard a server as Serena. Osaka has a number of good wins as well. Heaven help us. :wall:

Let's Go, Daniela!

Daniela plays on the main Court. It's the 4th match. Play starts at 10 AM.
Maybe Daniela can drop shot Osaka to death. :dunno:

This is a really tough draw as Osaka is one of the best young players and she beat Svitolina at the Australian Open and Errani in Miami. Plus she's a power player and the type of player that has been giving Daniela so many problems recently. It's going to be very difficult so we'll see what Daniela can do.

The winner plays either Barbora Krejcikova or Louisa Chico.

I suppose that Daniela will probably play doubles so we'll see who her partner is.

Osaka is a tough ticket, but ranking has not great meaning on WTA tour, we can see it often... Let's play Dani!! :)

Is Louisa a descendant of Chico Marx? :o

6-2 7-5!! Won last 6 games! Good call, Peter!

This is...hold on...what's that you say, Sir Elton John? This is the song Dani should be humming today? OK, I'll pass it on.

I'm Still Standing, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!

Celebrating with a Coke and a smile! Of course I had my doubts coming in, based on what we'd seen against young power players, particularly Next Big Things. However, this is a We Can Dare To Hope Again performance! Daniela dominated the opening set, even after losing serve with a 3-1 lead. She broke right back and cruised. In the very first game, Daniela came up with 2 aces! (Overall she had 4 to Osaka's 5, far closer than expected.)

When was the last time our gal came back from 1-5 down to win a set? Astounding. Particularly after frustration early in the set looked like it had created irreversible momentum for Osaka. After winning the first game, Daniela was up 0-30 with a chance for a break, then in the next game she led 40-0 and had one more game point after deuce, only to get broken. Osaka pounced. Within the next three games she inserted 10 straight points at one stage and looked to be rolling to the set and likely the match.

Not so fast! I was satisfied when she held to 2-5, but never thought brilliant comeback until she broke Osaka for 3-5. From there Dani just simply kicked serious butt! How about 6-6 on break point chances? :) How about 10-12 on 2nd serve return points? :!: Let's just say......How about Daniela!? This really, really feels good, qualifier or not. :wav:

And lest I forget, #549 is in the books.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Wonderful win, especially to fight the way she did in the 2nd set.

Hopefully she can continue this tomorrow...but for now...

Daniela faces Louisa Chirico (not Chico, which makes my bad Marx Brothers pun even worse) on the main Court. It's the second match. Play begins at 11 AM.

FYI: Slovakia leads Canada 2-0. 3 set wins for Domi and Schmeidlova.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Absolutely fantastic win by Daniela, especially the fight back in the second half. I've got to admit I wasn't too optimistic before the match but this is a great win. Daniela'a always had the desire but she showed that she still has the skills and stamina to come back from 5-1 down when it really looked like going to a third set. The crucial game was when she was serving at 3-5 and Daniela held on after two deuces on her third game point and she was all over Osaka's second serve in the second set. Winning every single BP is great too.

We'll see how Daniela does against Chirico who also had a straight sets win today but hopefully Daniela can keep her momentum going.

6 straight pts from 1-5 this is amazing Dani..this showed that you're still a fighter can still do damage to younger big hitter players. There's still hope..just keep on playing like this and quali points will help her ranking. Do your best!
