Jankovic has, last I heard, given up playing Fed Cup. Ivanovic hasn't committed either. That being said,I hope Daniela reconsiders and takes a WC into Pattaya. I don't see what she has got to lose now.

Not playing Pattaya? I wonder what her goals are this year given her circumstances right now.

If Dani chooses not to defend in Thailand, not only does she give up an opportunity for a Three-peat, the ranking tumble that will cause will be more than just hard to swallow for me. My wife is slowly getting better, and we have been starting to plan a trip she has always wanted to do, which is travel all the way down America's West Coast (she once lived in San Francisco). The last city would be San Diego, and we have talked about taking a day to go to Carlsbad and see Daniela play again. I do believe that no matter how far the rankings she slips, her popularity would get her a few wild cards. But if Carlsbad's not one of them, I just can't imagine it will work out. As dedicated as Dani is, I just can't fathom her playing in qualifiers. Ever. And, Carlsbad always has been a place where Daniela does the autograph table. As lucky as I have been when it comes to her, there still is the dream of actually meeting her face-to-face (well, a dream for me...probably a pretty scary thought for her!) and speaking to her. Oh well, it's still months away, anything could happen.

Let's Go, Daniela!

If Sveta(a 2-time Slam winner)is prepared to do the hard graft and play qualifiers, then Daniela has no excuses.

Dani loves playing at Carlsbad, and I'm sure she'd turn up,even just to play doubles. Treat yourself,Alex.

Daniela will do what Daniela wants to do and I respect her decisions. Pattaya always exhausts her so maybe it's a tactic to be fresh for Doha/Dubai. We mustn't forget that has no points to defend in the biggest Doha/Dubai tournament and Indian Wells, and only 3rd round at Miami. She missed the whole clay season last year so essentially the only way is up after Pattaya. I've been saying this for a while but one deep run in a big tournament is all Daniela needs, it's just gotta come sooner than later.

It's difficult to know what Daniela's plans are. I think she was anticipating doing better in Australia and resting for Fed Cup and that's why she hadn't committed to Pattaya. That could change and I'm sure she'd get a wildcard if she wanted. She could want to save herself for the Fed Cup or she could feel that she needs to rest and recover and pace herself through the season as she's been hampered by injury already this year and needs longer to get over injuries. The season is long and it's important that she is healthy enough to play well through the entire season. She hardly has any points to defend after February so if she's fit and is able to play well and get wins then she'll be picking up points, a good run somewhere, anywhere really will give her a big boost. It's the points she losing at the moment that are the worry and it'll be sad to see Daniela give up Pattaya without a fight.

Daniela's ranking should be good enough to get her into the Middle Eastern tournaments but unless she does really well there she's not going to be seeded for Indian Wells or Miami, although it's been a while since she's won in Indian Wells so maybe starting in the first round could help her there.

Daniela will be competing for wild cards with other players like Kuznetsova, Zvonareva and Pennetta who've slid down the rankings lately and chances are she'd have to qualify for a lot of Premiers although she'd probably get into Internationals. It's weird that both her wins this year have been against top 50 players, one was against a top 10er, but she's lost to two players outside the top 100 and the no 81 and they were all players she'd always beaten in the past. Daniela's very resilient but losing on outside courts to lousy players will hurt her.

One thing is that Daniela's always worked hard and been very dedicated. You just look at the sacrifices she's made and how much she's pushed herself over the years, she'll do everything she can to turn things around.

That's just IMHO about the qualifiers...Dani may well do them if she has to. As for Carlsbad, Benji, maybe you can arrange it so she does an autograph table, with all the pull I just know you have! :)

Let's Go, Daniela!

Kimiko Date-Krumm gave Nadia Petrova a complete thrashing 6-2 6-0, so it shows that Daniela can still have a few years left and/or that anyone can have an off day.

It's good to hear that your wife is getting better, Alex, it would be great if you could both go and see Daniela win some matches.

Chan was pretty competitive against Ivanovic and won a set 6-1 and she won more games and points, not that it does Daniela any good but it maybe puts her result into a bit of perspective. Tsurenko beat Pavlyuchenkova here so it's not like Daniela's lost to players that have done absolutely nothing, they've at least had good performances afterwards.

Dominika lost to Valeria Savinykh, a Russian qualifier, so Jana Cepelova is the last Slovak in singles.

Daniela's doubles match is on Margaret Court so it'll be televised and there should be a stream. Hopefully Daniela can put in a good run in the doubles and salvage something from this tournament and if she plays mixed it would be great to have a run there. The must important thing is that she gets out of the tournament healthy, she's able to heal and recover and she can be able to play well the rest of the year.

Hey, did anyone catch Daniela quite subtly taking up for herself on her Facebook page? As you may know or can imagine, when she loses early in a major, the loonies escape the asylum and post angry and often extremely filthy comments. The filth-mongers didn't come out this time, but one fellow, who to be fair is an ardent supporter of Dani, delivered lengthy, scathing criticism. In the nearly 2 years that I've been a contributor to the page, I have only seen Daniela put up her own general messages, which draw a number of comments underneath from fans. Maybe once before did she write one of those comments, and it was innocuous. Yesterday, she posted a rather neat photo of herself hitting a shot, and below it was this:

Daniela Hantuchova "Failure teaches success", Japanese Saying. Thanks everyone for the great support everyday. Ready for Doubles at Australian Open.

Way to be, Daniela! Of course, we know she has far too much class to express anger or dismay, but I grasped it very clearly. Nice job, Dani! Let's root for her to get things done in doubles.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Anyone else watching the Australian Open matches think that the standard of tennis is amazing this year? Not just the men, but the women are seriously hitting so hard, and those that are more finesse players just haven't a chance..

You obviously missed the hot messes that were Watson vs Pervak and Ivanovic vs Chan. :P

Djokovic was incredible last night though,I agree.

No I didn't but the ball is so fast and hard! I just don't think Daniela can deal with the pace atm...such a shame her match wasn't on a show court..court 19 looks so ugly too...almost not in the complex!

A rare treat for me, guys. In my household, watching live streams on the computer is darn near impossible, and not too many of Dani's matches are televised in America. But due to DirecTV's package, I'm watching her right now! Of course, after I put it on, her team has hardly converted a point (jinx that I am). Hey, they just broke back to get to 2-3 on serve. Crossing toes and fingers!
Good gosh, this is painful to watch. Suddenly Sam can play well in her homeland. Daniela and Anabel just escaped being broken for the 5th time in a row.
3-6, 1-2. Dani's not playing well, except for the occasional winner. Anabel is stinking the joint out. Dani's Doubles Partner Of The Week doesn't look like a good choice to me. Can't she get back to playing with Aga? Why can't Ai Sugiyama come out of retirement? There's as much chemistry and camaraderie between these two as there is between the Israelis and the Palestinians. 1-5 now. The only good thing is that Daniela isn't wearing any tape or bandages. But, while Julia and Sam are bombing serves consistently at 170-180 km, Dani's serves are mostly in the 130's, once in a while mid-150's.
3-6, 1-6. How in Hades did they get a seed and Julia/Sam, who actually looked like a team, not? :( In the immortal words of Sam the Sham and the Phahroes, I mean Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!
Being American, where we have no use for the metric system, I needed help converting kms to miles, so I looked it up. I wish I hadn't. Dani's serves were mostly in the low to mid 80's, no higher than 96. Something's wrong, scary wrong, don't you think?

Let's Go, Daniela!
