We'll just see how Daniela does in this tournament. She'll be grieving her grandmother and we don't know how much she's recovered from the bone spur in her foot, so it will be difficult for her. Maybe a rest and events will focus her mind but if her mind is elsewhere then it's understandable as some things are more important than tennis and she was very close to her grandmother. It would be fantastic if Daniela could do well here but given the circumstances we'll just have to take things one match at a time.

Daniela has drawn a qualifier in the opening round, and the second round seed is Chinese number 2 Peng Shuai (although she has a tough opener in Flavia Pennetta, who beat her in New York).

Daniela's quarter:

WOZNIACKI [1] v Hradecka
Medina Garrigues v Gajdosova
Kanepi v S Zheng [WC]
Begu v LISICKI [14]

PENG [12] v Pennetta
Hantuchova v Qualifier
Zhang [WC] v Cibulkova
Jovanovski v SCHIAVONE [7]

That's a very promising draw. Here's hoping Daniela shows them what she's made of this week. :)

1st round is good, but 2nd round will be tough. 3rd here would be a successful tournament.

The first round is decent although there are some good players in qualifying so it could be a tricky match. Second round won't be easy as Peng has been playing very well this year while Pennetta had a good run at the US Open although Daniela beat her in straight sets in Cincinnati. This is a mandatory event so it's important that Daniela has a decent run and gets some points and gets back some momentum. Daniela's playing doubles with Agnieszka and the draw is fairly decent with the first seeded opponents being King & Shvedova in the quarter-final.

Hopefully Daniela's over her injury and the death of her grandmother and she can play good tennis and do well here.

Given the depth of the field, getting any draw where Daniela will be a first round favorite is a win.

Daniilidou's a better opponent for Daniela than some of the other qualifiers. Daniilidou beat Kerber in qualifying and she has to be respected as an opponent but her results over the past couple of seasons have been fairly modest. If Daniela's fit and focused, she should beat Daniilidou easily enough. If she's still hampered by her foot injury and depending on how much she's affected by her grandmother's passing then it could be tough. The important thing is that Daniela gets the win.

6-4 Daniela first set. Very close! 5-2 one more game, breaks Daniilidou to love to win 6-4, 6-2!!!!!!

Nice quick match, finally some points at a mandatory tournament! :) Daniela will have a day off tomo. Either Peng or Pennetta will be tough. This win is encouraging though.
