Not a great draw. I wasn't expecting Daniela to get beyond the second round since all the top players are here and therefore all the seeds are quality players, but since she has drawn Dulko in round 1 Daniela may not even get beyond the opening round. Gisela has been playing well recently and is a good clay-courter, so not particularly high expectations for this match and the tournament as a whole. Unless however, she manages to pull off a first round win against the Argentinian and Jankovic gets injured! If that happens then the draw is actually quite good through to the semi-finals!

Doubles draw isn't too bad. A few tough unseeded players in their section, but they have a reasonable chance of going deep into the tournament, as they have done this week in Rome.

I'm quite surprised that they drew the 'BYES' randomly instead of giving the four available to the top four seeds. Seeds 1, 5, 6 and 7 are straight into the second round, whilst the likes of Dementieva and S.Williams have to play a first round match.

Hi all. I'm new, here. I am french and I speak a bad english. :?
The match of Daniela against Gisela Dulko will be difficult but not impossible !
I think that they have given bye at players who are in semifinal in Rome.

Just look who played semis in Rome. If they are seeded at the next tournament, in this case all 4 are seeded in Madrid, they are rewarded with opening round bye as per new WTA rule.

Hi, JoHantu, welcome onboard.

That's ridiculous that they should have 1st round byes. Daniela and Sugiyama are also still in Rome because of the doubles but they have to play a 1st round singles match - preferential treatment grrrrrrrr

Daniela's draw was truly conceived in the bowels of hell. :wall: Still,it will be a good test of how well she is playing. I don't think Gisela is capable of overpowering Daniela,so it will be a case of how well Daniela's groundstrokes hold up against Dulko's excellent defence.

about the byes, I agree that it might seem a bit unfair to the Estoril Semifinalist and the doubles finalists but IMO it's better than just giving the byes to the top4. Also had no byes been given at all we might witness more retirements in Rome as Madrid is a more important tournament

yes but that would mean how many byes
4x Rome SF
4x Estoril SF
possibly 8 Rome Doubles SF
possibly 8 Estoril Doubles SF

that's a max of 24 byes. Too much. I am sure some lower ranked players would protest then

You would have to be a semi-finalist in Rome, and be one of the top-16 seeds in Madrid to get a bye right? So they could only ever give out a maximum of 16 byes (if Estoril and doubles was included too). Even if the tour did include Estoril and doubles its highly unlikely that they would need to give out that many byes. Many top doubles players don't do as well in singles so wouldn't be in contention to play in Madrid or be seeded. Moreover, not many seeded players in Madrid would have played in Estoril (they would have most likely played in Rome, or not played at all), so I can see why the tour has just kept it to Rome, and just singles competition. However, on the whole I'm not a big fan of this change, I think it should always be the top-four seeds, or top-eight seeds that get byes into round 2.
Results dictate ranking, and ranking dictates seeding and therefore byes. It shouldn't be results dictacting both ranking and byes. Its a weird concept, because you would think that if they were going to do this they would just scrap the seeding system and let the results from the week before dictate who gets seeded at the next tournament.

Could be a very bad day (two losses), a very good day (two wins), or an ok day (one win, one loss)!
