weird to see her way down there. Hopefully she can play well and make a couple of upsets on her way. Like beating Jankovic.
Podme Danka.

The draw just got released, and looks something like this:

1 - S.WILLIAMS (USA) v I.BENESOVA (RTC)
P.KVITOVA (RTC) v QUALIF.
QUALIF. v N.VAIDISOVA (RTC)
K.KANEPI (EST) v 7 - A.MEDINA GARRIGUES (ESP)

3 - E.DEMENTIEVA (RUS) v A.SUJIYAMA (JAP)
A.PAVLYUCHENKOVA (RUS) v V.RAZZANO (FRA)
S.CIRSTEA (ROU)v N.DECHY (FRA)
A.BONDARENKO (UKR) v 6 - P.SCHNYDER (SUI)

8 - A.MAURESMO (FRA) v S.ERRANI (ITA)
T.BACSINSZKY (SUI) v M.NICULESCU (ROU)
A.KLEYBANOVA (RUS) v T.PIRONKOVA (BUL)
QUALIF. v 4 - A.RADWANSKA (POL)

5 - A.CORNET (FRA) v QUALIF.
E.MAKAROVA (RUS) v D.HANTUCHOVA (SVK)
A.SZAVAY (HUN) v N.LI (CHN)
F.SCHIAVONE (ITA) v 2 - J.JANKOVIC (SRB)

I don't know much about Makarova, but she took a set off Safina at the AO this year, so I'm sure she's a tough opponent. Anyone know if she's a hard hitter who will blast Daniela off court or a counter-puncher who gets everything back??

And she's not entered into the Doubles with Ai, so I hope she gets far in this tournament and gets some much needed quality wins

I don't think Makarova is such a hard hitter, but she's an up and coming player that's for sure.
Overall that's a pretty good draw for Daniela - lets' hope she puts herself in a position to get revenge on Cornet.

sorry, don't know much about makarova, except she is a lefty. She took a set of Safina and led Dementieva 5-2 I think in Sydney, but lost the set and the 2nd set easily. She beat Chakvetadze at the US Open last year, and when looking at her results after the US Open she seems to beat the lower-ranked players and give the harder ranked players a hard time. The match vs Safina was shown on TV here, but I don't remember if it was poor play from Safina or Makarova playing well.
My guess: She is no walk-over. Daniela has to concentrate but is def. capable of beating. I would put Daniela as the favorite but not a clear one.

This draw is a dream draw for me. Chance to get revenge on Cornet. Then JJ who wasn't impressive at all at the Aus Open. I know I am looking far ahead but I can't help it. Bad habit. The top half is packed compared to the bottom. Serena and Dementieva vs JJ and Radwanska.

Daniela is in an interesting section of the draw. She is among several players (Cornet, Szavay, Schiavone, Jankovic) who have been involved in Fed Cup this week, and have had either good wins or bad losses. Schiavone is playing well and could cause Jankovic some trouble, and no one knows what Li Na may bring; she could go very deep into the tournament if she plays well (e.g. Gold Coast winner 2008). Cornet will have probably lost a bit of confidence since losing to Schiavone, whereas Daniela has had a good win against Wickmayer.
I hope Daniela can at least make the quarter-finals here, and really get her season going. Makarova is a good first round opponant considering she could have had one of the top seeds, such as Serena or Elena, in the opening round.
I'm sure she'll be playing doubles her too since Ai is also in the singles draw (playing Dementieva in round 1).

edit: Doubles draw is out; no Daniela and Ai.

She's got the draw, she just needs to capitilise on it. Hopefully she can put herself in a position to play Cornet, for a nice revenge win :D

Her first round has me a little worried though. But i guess it could be worse...

Anyone know about viewing her matches?

As we all want to see Daniela back to the top of the ranking, I think Makarova mustn't be a problem for her.
But the most important thing is to defend her points from last year and get some good wins here.

Cornet also just lost heavily to Pennetta 62 62. But of course we must concentrate on Daniela's 1st round match.

Makarova is one of my minor favourites. She is one of the very few lefties with a great technique, her groundstrokes are beautiful and have a Rios-esque feel in them. Against Safina she just tanked the match once Safina started playing a bit better, which shows she lacks mental fortitude, pretty much like every Russian out there but Shazza.

It's possible to watch the tournament via Eurosport player.

At this point, we just have to be happy Daniela didn't draw one of the seeded players in round one and didn't draw a top-flight player in round two. Such is life when you are unseeded.

It's a decent draw. Makarova is someone that has the talent to beat Daniela and who's been competitive against top players. She tends to beat the players she should beat but generally loses to the players who should beat her, so this gives a good indication of Daniela's level.
If Daniela plays well she should win, but if she doesn't or Makarova plays well then it'll be a lot harder.

Cornet lost both her matches in the Fed Cup and she was crying in the Pennetta match, so it's a good opportunity for Daniela to get revenge should they meet. Cornet's won the last two matches they've played but Daniela had her chances in both of them, so I think it'll probably be a close match. If Daniela beats Cornet this would be the highest ranked player she's beaten since Sydney last year, so it would be a good win.

Daniela's got to beat Makarova first and that's a tricky match. The cliche of one match at a time applies.

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.
