adidas and Daniela begin new partnership at the US Open 2009-08-28 Herzogenaurach/New York, August 28th, 2009 - adidas is proud to announce the signing of Slovakian tennis star Daniela Hantuchova. The 26-year-old will wear the adilibria tennis apparel line from this year’s US Open onwards after signing with the 3-Stripes.

Daniela Hantuchova, a former top five player and two-time winner of Indian Wells, will start working with the adidas Player Development Program team consisting of coaches Sven Groeneveld and Darren Cahill and physical trainer Gil Reyes over the coming weeks and months as she enters a new phase in her career. The Program which was created in 2006 in the spirit of the adidas founder Adi Dassler, offers a unique mix of advice and support, from coaching and fitness training through to hitting-partners, nutritional advice and career management plans.

I'm confused. Does this mean she's stopped working with Larri Passos and Pat Etcheberry?

I can see the attraction of adidas for Daniela because she can use the adidas coaches and she'd probably get some input into the design of her dresses. I'd imagine it would be the better deal financially as well. Adidas would be prepared to do more for her and offer her a better deal than Nike.

Nike tend to put most of their resources into the megastars like Federer, Nadal and Shazza but not an awful lot for their other players. Adidas seem like they do more for their players with things like the coaches and player development. Daniela said in one of the Auckland podcasts that she wears whatever Nike tell her to while if adidas give her a say in what she wears and the design then that would appeal to Daniela, especially as she's interested in fashion and design.
It's also possible that Nike want to have as much spare cash as possible to try sign Murray when his deal with Fred Perry runs out because they wanted to sign Roddick and re-sign Hewitt but didn't have the money because they'd committed too much to signing Serena, amoung other factors.

Maursemo and Ivanovic both won slams and got to no.1 after leaving Nike.

Daniela's already had a training session with Cahill, so the adidas coaches are a resource that she wants to use.

One benefit is that other adidas players can't use any adidas coaches for on-court coaching when they're playing Daniela, but Daniela can still use Passos.
