Daniela Hantuchova talks physical fitness and how crucial it is for her to add muscle to be able to compete
Monday, 23 May 2011 18:22

No.28 seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia eased into the second round at Roland Garros with a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 win against Shuai Zhang of China. The 28-year old stunner from Slovakia now playing in her 10th French Open will be hoping at the very least to make the second week here.

In a candid interaction with the press Hantuchova spoke about how important it is to enjoy her tennis, playing doubles and getting physically stronger in order to compete with the new crop of players.

Q. You're playing with Agnieszka Radwanska doubles this year. You are a good team. What you can do in Grand Slam this year?

DANIELA HANTUCHOVA: Um, yeah, like you said, we are having so much fun. It's really great to play with her. Not only on the court, but off the court also I think we are very good friends.

We don't know what we can do in slam. I mean, we just started beginning of the year and really didn't expect anything, and suddenly there we are winning Miami. It was quite amazing.

Of course we try to do well in the slams as well, but it's more important just having fun and really enjoying the tennis.

Q. How would describe that match?

DANIELA HANTUCHOVA: It was okay. I for sure know I could have played much better. At the same time, I just did what I needed to do today. It was a good test for me today.

I'm feeling very good, especially in the practice, and also last week I was playing some good tennis. Hopefully my form can just go higher.

Q. Some of the players have been talking about balls and how hard they are and what effect they're having on the game. What do you think about it?

DANIELA HANTUCHOVA: Yeah, I got used to them last week because they were the same. It took me a few days to adjust my shots. Yeah, they do fly a little more, but I like that. The faster the better, so I can't complain.

Q. Are they kicking more on the serve?

DANIELA HANTUCHOVA: Yes, they are, especially when there is a ball change. There is a huge difference.

Q. You've been working a lot on your fitness and physical training. You did work with Gill Reyes; is that correct?

DANIELA HANTUCHOVA: I did go to Vegas for two weeks a year ago, a year and a half ago, but for the last three years I've been working with Pat Etcheberry.

Q. Can you talk about how that's affected your game and maybe also if it's affected your attitude or the mental aspect of the game?

DANIELA HANTUCHOVA: Definitely being physically prepared helps you mentally as well. I think I did a great job the last few months. We worked very, very hard with Pat. Seems like it's paying off in the practice for the moment, and hopefully it will come in the results as well. I feel like we have put the work in, it's just a matter of time to put it all together.

Q. What exactly did you work on?

DANIELA HANTUCHOVA: Mainly the weights and the power, because that's what I need in today's tennis because it's becoming so much more physical. I never had problems with endurance, because I feel like I can stay on the court for as long as I need to.

But, yeah, just tried to bring the power up. Yeah, we did a lot of hours in the gym.

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.

From a local newspaper site from Strasbourg region :

Translation by Google (and me), so some terms are probably not perfect :

Training partner of Daniela Hantuchova throughout the week, Jonathan Jeuch (1/6) was privileged to witness the training of the top player of Slovakia.

"She came without a coach and looking for a sparring for the week. The organization contacted me and so ... Obviously we can not compare women's and men's tennis. But in terms of feeling, I would say that the quality of Daniela's balls is that of a player's rated negative, so no problem for me. But, during exchange, I can not compare because my goal was not to win the point at all costs but to make her work. I noticed that there was a difference in her shots between training days and match days (note: Hantuchova has lost in the semifinals on Friday), where she tensed up a little ... There is also a difference in attitude in game. Sometimes, when I was served kicked on her backhand, she advanced in the court and struck me with a backhand return winner by taking the ball ahead (rising). In the match, against the same service, she rather had tendency to move back. Sometimes I asked her: "Why don't you do it in a match ...?

Very interesting,Jean Raj,thank you very much. Daniela has often talked very wistfully about not being able to bring her form from the practise courts into the matches themselves.

A little confidence goes a long way with Daniela. It was very noticeable that coming of her Pattaya win,she really went after her service returns against Azarenka in Doha, which helped her crush Vika in the final two sets. Unfortunately, the cruel loss to Zvonerava really seems to have dented her confidence-hopefully she can regain it soon.

Getting to know Daniela Hantuchova
Daniela Hantuchova was catapulted back into the spotlight on Friday when she beat the world no.1 Caroline Wozniacki in the third round. The 28th seed told us her performance came as the result of six months’ hard work.

When she entered the top five at the age of 20, predictions of greatness flew fast and furious, but Daniela Hantuchova has never quite fulfilled those expectations. Despite periodically achieving excellent results throughout her career, the Slovakian is the first to admit she has been frustratingly inconsistent. Now though, Daniela says she has learned from her mistakes.

With Friday's upset of world no.1 Caroline Wozniacki in the third round, Slovakia's Hantuchova says she finally "reaped the rewards of experience" at the age of 28, after 11 years on the tour.

Daniela is as ambitious as ever and has had a new coach, Matej Liptak, her Fed Cup captain, since November 2010.

"I am more confident and relaxed now. I am having more fun than before because I'm mentally stronger. I stay focused on my game without worrying about my opponent or doubting myself," says the woman who reached the semifinals at the 2008 Australian Open, the only time she reached the final four in a Grand Slam.

"She is much calmer now"
"I think I never had the results my game deserved because, most of the time, in the Round of 16 or quarterfinals, I had to face the Williams sisters. I never doubted my tennis, or I would have stopped playing," continues Daniela.

"She came to me in November to see if we could work together. She was really motivated and I always believed in her tennis. Her game was always good. We just needed to work on the mental part," confides Matej Liptak, in a measured voice projecting the aura of zen he has been instilling in his protégée. "She is much calmer now," he adds.

Finding happiness on the court
"Daniela is happier on the court. Her big problem was consistency and confidence. We had to work on that but Daniela knows what she wants so we work well together. She no longer panics when she's behind, and has stopped asking herself too many questions. She is more positive. If she concentrates on her game, she becomes formidable," claims Liptak, who used to be Petra Kvitova's coach.

Beaten by Samantha Stosur in Stuttgart and Madrid, and then by Francesca Schiavone in Rome, the two-time Indian Wells champion (2002, 2007) proved that she can still go far. "She is physically in peak form," says Liptak. "I don't want to compare with how I was before; I am now only thinking of the present. Everything happens for a reason, and you have to accept the lows in a career but you have to fight when things get tough," says Daniela, with a perspective gained from her long experience in the game.

Quarter-finals in mind
"My love of tennis is what has always made me want to keep playing," she explains. On Sunday, Hantuchova could reach her first-ever quarterfinal at the French Open, and her fourth overall in Grand Slams. She also has four WTA titles.

Are we now seeing Daniela 2.0?
"We'll see at the end of my career how we define this period," retorts the world no.29, smiling. As Liptak points out, they hope "this is only the beginning."

“I’m looking forward to getting on the grass next week at the AEGON Classic and playing some decent matches.”

Sport Poll: Can Hantuchova returned to the Top 10?
15.06.2011 00:00, Tennis

SPORTS POLL

Slovak tennis player Daniela Hantuchova, currently 25th player of the world rankings and a former top ten player (5th in 2003), is experiencing a period of Successful tennis. At the February tournament leaders in Thailand Pattaya followed up in recent weeks a great game on clay and advance to the semifinals at Strasbourg and Roland Garros Grand Slam fourth round, where the 3rd round the world leader defeated Dane Wozniacki. Last weekend was on the verge of the grass season zaskvela procedure to the finals in Birmingham. With these results and improved speech on the court is, therefore, the current question is whether to return to the top ten.

Janette Husarova
World Champion in doubles in 2002
"Very difficult question ... In any event, the Top Ten already, so the game is there. Getting into the top ten is difficult, because the tennis is competitive, now returning to the circuit as Williams sisters and the highest rungs in the ladder are only for "the elect". Daniela is a mature player, its results will be important for large tournaments and stable performance, but perhaps most mental strength. If this can handle it and not worry about health issues, certainly has a chance."

IGOR Moško
Secretary General of STZ
"Once I saw it personally at Roland Garros and now plays as the grass, yes. Led by coach Matthias Lipták started demanding training process and is working on what's missing: more exercise, last longer in the exchanges, active physical tennis. If this last deployment, may attack the top ten. Daniel is ambitious and smart, has a good genetic disposition that years ago, tennis negative nezoženštieva ', so their movements can be improved even in their thirties and beyond."

KARINA CÍLEKOVÁ-Habsudova
Former Top 10 player
"If you keep the current level of play, yes. I really liked her tennis speech at this year's Roland Garros. In addition, it has returned to its former length strokes and added significantly better movement. Thus, if the very basic condition, such as good health, without injuries, inserted above standard has the potential to return to the top ten. Is sufficiently versatile, can play on the court from different angles, from different positions, and this is its advantage."

ŠTEFAN ČIŽMAROVIČ
former coach Hantuchova
"For this year, Daniela is one of the best for last a long time, maybe since 2002. Has balanced results and sufficient confidence to come back into the top ten. Also because its game is not formulaic, but rather variable, returns to what Sometimes played. Also improve the administration and the movement, which had reserves. Can overcome the top 10 players, which is reflected on its balance this year's tournament and suggests that it may again move into the top ten."

Hantuchova: I persuaded myself that I could have
Daniel Sarga | 17 June 2011 11:00

Daniela Hantuchova tennis survives in the long term than not. On the grass in Eastbourne English already forwarded to the semifinals, when disposed of an American former world champion Venus Williams 6:2, 5:7, 6:2. Until now this was the rival like a Slovak zakliata. In ten mutual matches had zero victories in the box and played will be only two sets. Now it finally broke.

After Roland Garros champion fresh Na Li Chinese women remained at a five-fold rocket Hantuchova Wimbledon winner, who wishes to give a gift to Friday 31st birthday. About three years younger rival would not let her. "I knew about her birthday. But I also knew well that no gift from me get free," said Daniela Hantuchova in a good mood for the truth.

You first beat Venus Williams in his career? What are the prevailing feelings in you?
I really appreciate that it managed to beat me just on the grass. Just saying that she won Wimbledon five times. As I finally convinced myself that it does not matter who is on the opposite side of the net when I play it, what I do. This is the most important of all.

You have not conceded that you have against each rival, against whom you have absolutely the worst record of all?
Absolutely I have not been addressed. Each match is different and I played in this tournament very well. I am now confident enough and I have no reason to deal with the past.

The wind was on the court places great enemy for you both. It you change the tactics of law in relation to wind conditions?
Absolutely. From the beginning I tried to follow exactly the game plan and build it to me. I played it on what we agreed with the coach. When, however, began to blow, it should be adapted to the wind. Unnecessarily risking the beauty and not to play because it is not paid.

The first set you played on as partes, but then the quality of the game marked the apparently troublesome wind.
In the second and third that game was probably already the most beautiful tennis. Important, however, was that I was mentally up and I fought for every ball. Sometimes enough to return it to the other side through the network, because it was abnormal and as the ball odfúkavalo. Certainly I did not want to play only obranársky. Experienced rival would be used.

In the second set have led 4-2, but the terminal was dominated by rival. It seemed that you have no power to push it.
From players like Venus Williams can not wait for that game I just surrendered. In the second set proved its quality. Important, however, was that I quickly threw away the set for the head up and was concentrated in the top third.

He was in good terminal match the evolving moment when you were already certain victory?
Also, anything in any match there. While not converted match point, nothing is certain. And especially on grass.

What is the status of sore shoulders, which are taking anti-inflammatory drugs?
It is not the best. Cold and wind in this game too profited arm. Definitely go for the physiotherapist to me about what the best care and try to wonder.

Already waiting for you round against Czech Petra Kvitova. What is to be prepared?
Petya plays grass very well, has excellent service. I do not really have anything to lose. In Eastbourne I ran three superzápasy and better preparation prior to Wimbledon I could wish for.

Gigglers, worriers, smilers and stars...all at my academy

Nick Bollettieri, the world's greatest tennis coach, assesses the Wimbledon prospects of the mixed bag of players he has worked with at his Florida base
Saturday, 18 June 2011

Daniela Hantuchova
(Slovakia, aged 28, world No 25)

Daniela's a super girl, as kind as can be. In the past she's sent me little notes to thank me for the two or three years she had at the academy when she was young. She came back with her coach to see us a couple of years ago. She's a superstar, a real ambassador for our sport. She'll have a wonderful life after tennis.

Her ground strokes are as good as they come, her technique is unbelievable and she's a beautiful volleyer. She played a great tournament at Edgbaston and has done well again this week at Eastbourne.

Daniela got to No 5 in the world eight years ago. I'd love to say she has one more big Grand Slam tournament in her, but if she's to make the second week at Wimbledon I think she has to come into the net more. She hits the ball beautifully from the baseline but with the way the game is played today I think she has to attack more. You can't just stay back these days.

In the first paragraph is the reason why I love DANI so much :)
