So no seeding then..the draw will be important...

Very tough field for the first week of the year, although made slightly less daunting a few days ago with Sharapova's withdrawal.
The focus of the week will no doubt be on grand slam champion Stosur and the return of both Clijsters and Williams.
A quarter-final showing here would be a solid start for Daniela. As mentioned though, the draw is key.

It's a strong field with a lot of quality players. It would have been great if Daniela had been seeded.
As eddy said the draw will be important, so hopefully Daniela can get a good one. It would be great for her to get some wins and start the year well and gain some confidence and momentum for the Australian Open after a tough time at the end of last season. It would also help with the seeding at the Australian Open.

Daniela's ankle was taped up in practice today so hopefully that's just precautionary. Last season was blighted by injury so hopefully she's going to be fit and healthy because when she was fit last year she played some great tennis.

Not the best draw to start the year, but not entirely unexpected given the field either.

Certainly a top-heavy draw. Daniela's not come out too badly though. Cibulkova is beatable on this surface, then Czink or a qualifier potentially in round 2.

Quarter-final here would be great!

Daniela is 3-0 against Cibulkova and I really want her to keep her 100% record. It's a tough opener as Cibulkova finished last season really well. If Daniela had been in the next quarter of the draw or had a lower ranked player in her first match then she really could have gone on a good run, but she's isn't so she'll have to start well against a good opponent. A win here would give Daniela a big boost to start the year and give her a lot of confidence and momentum. We'll also see how fit Daniela is and how well she's doing with her new coach.
Daniela's also playing doubles with Schiavone and they open against Llagostera Vives & Parra Santonja.

Happy New Year to everyone and especially to Daniela, and I really hope she has a happy, healthy and successful 2012.

Daniela might as well open against Cibulkova. She's not all that far above our gal in the rankings, so not only do we get to see immediately if she's fit and has started to be helped by her new coach, but should all go well, it hurts Cibulkova and may well allow Dani to move up a spot or two with another win or two this week. Since she missed Brisbane last year, a loss won't be devastating, and it may show how much more she needs to do. I recognize that I do this at my own peril, but Daniela has made me excited for the year with what she has said about her shoulder, her coach, her Olympic dreams and her multiple comments about how much she wants to return to Top 10. We can certainly hope. Let's Go, Daniela!!
