Draws for the main competitions
02 May 2013

On Friday we will know how the players match up in the main draws for the Mutua Madrid Open both in the men’s and women’s tournaments. Petra Kvitova and Daniela Hantuchova will be the WTA representatives at the draw.
The Mutua Madrid Open is underway. In less than 24 hours the frantic action will begin on the fourteen courts at the Caja Mágica. But before the clay opens its doors the best players in the world the draw has to be made.

The draws for the ATP and WTA competitions will be made on Friday. At 14:00, in the Tennis Garden at the Caja Mágica, the women’s draw will take place in the presence of Petra Kvitova, the world number 8, and Daniela Hantuchova.

And at 18:30 the men’s draw will be held on the terrace of the VIP tent at the Caja Mágica.

This is an important tournament as it a Premier mandatory so a good run here and the points will be so important. Daniela doesn't have any clay points to defend but she has to start picking up point and going back up the rankings. Hopefully Daniela can do better here than Charleston or Marrakech, but she'll have had a bit of time here to prepare and get used to the conditions and she can go in rested and refreshed. If she plays like she did in the Fed Cup, then Daniela can do well here but so much will depend on the draw so hopefully she gives herself a good one but we can't look too far ahead.

Won't it be very difficult to get a decent draw?

1st round vs Sloane Stephens.
2nd round Kvitova or Wickmayer
3rd Round Stosur/Suarez Navarro

To be honest I'll take a first rounder with Stephens in this stacked field. Stephens was terrible in Charleston and I dont think clay is her best surface. So Daniela may be ok as long as she brings a good solid game and Sloane doesn't serve lights out. Hoping that Wickmayer can upset Kvitova.

Remember Mr. Bill, guys? Oohhhhhhhhh NOOOOOOOOO!! :( I have been dreading Daniela having to face Stephens. Her strength and power may well be too much to handle, even on clay. It would be very encouraging, however, if Daniela can pull it off. If you learn anything cheering her on, it's never say never!

Let's Go, Daniela!

It's a decent enough draw. Stephens' recent form hasn't been that great although she showed how well she can play in Australia and she had good runs in Strasbourg and Roland Garros last year so she can play well on clay.
Daniela will be the underdog but playing against a good player who isn't in great form is fairly decent as Daniela can raise her game and will have to be focused while the pressure will be on Stephens.

Daniela & Anabel have fifth seeds Mattek-Sands & Mirza in the first round of the doubles.

Daniela wins 6-3 7-5. Managed to serve out the match despite facing a couple of break points.

Remember my comment about never using the tune High Hopes? Well....Oops, There Goes Another Rubber Tree Plant! #496!
Mr. Bill says OhYes to this! From what I could gather, serve was impeccible for Dani today, and she broke Stephens at exactly the right times and won a lot of big points. Encouraging indeed. Never say never with Daniela!

Let's Go, Daniela!

That's a really encouraging win for Daniela.

Unfortunately Kvitova is most likely to be next. They've never met on clay before but clay can be a leveler. Wickmayer could cause the upset but whoever Daniela faces, Daniela needs to bring her absolute best.

Would have been horrible to have lost today whilst all the qualifiers were still playing so thank you Madrid for giving Daniela a lifeline.

A really good win by Daniela. It's her second consecutive straight sets win against a top 20 player and she didn't drop serve. Daniela won all the crucial points going 2/2 on her BP chances, while saving all 4 BPs on her serve, including 2 when serving for the match. Stephens was fighting to the end but Daniela overcame the resistance and got the win.

It gives Daniela 80 points and as this is a mandatory premier, that's good and will help with her ranking.

Kvitova held off Wickmayer 46 75 64.

Kvitova better have another bad day to give Daniela half a chance..

Yanina had her as well. Led 4-2 in the final set and then fell to pieces. I do like Petra and enjoy watching her play-but not against Daniela. :|
