Daniela got a wildcard into qualifying and she starts against Mandy Minella who beat her in Linz last October. Minella's had some decent results this year, her best being a run to the semi-final in Taipei beating Garcia along the way. That's easily Minella's best result this year. Most of the players she's beaten have been in the top 200. It's a tough match but Daniela played well in Acapulco and she can take momentum from there into Indian Wells.

The winner plays either Tereza Martincova or Naomi Broady.

This isn't my favorite tourney anymore. A beat down by Minella, 6-2 6-4. Dani had one bright moment when she evened up at 4 in the 2nd with a break of Minella and was ahead 30-15 in the next game, but it went no further. So we are left with our memories from when Daniela owned this place.

The difference in this match was BP conversions. Daniela was 1/8 while Minella was 4/10. Daniela was broken in the first game of the match and she had a BP in the next game to break back but couldn't and that basically was the match in microcosm. Mineral took enough of her chances while Daniela just couldn't take hers. Daniela had to save a couple of BPs in the third game before the held and the match went on serve until Minella broke again in the seventh game to go 5-2 before she served it out.

The second set went with serve for the first four games until Daniela was broken to love in the fifth game. She had 3 BPs to break right back but Minella held to lead 4-2, Daniela saved a BP in the next game before finally breaking Minella on her 4th BP to level at 4-4. Unfortunately, Daniela was broken to 30 in the next game before Minella served it out. Daniela was 30-15 up in both of the final two games but Minella won the last three points in both games.

The difference in the match was the serve: Minella got more 1st serves in and won more points on both 1st and 2nd serve. That would have told on the BPs.

On Monday, she fell behind early, losing the first two games of the first set. Her strong backhand has remained, and still excels hitting long groundstrokes. In her prime, she could cover a lot of ground with her long legs, though her waning athleticism has evidently hurt her return game.

While Minella advances, it’s anyone’s guess whether we’ve seen the last of Hantuchova at Indian Wells.

There are other stats that explain this one along with BP chances. I decided not to get into them since they are as ugly as Daniela is beautiful. :(

Daniela's not playing doubles, so that's that for Indian Wells this year :(
