Oh men, that is tough. Looks like a grand slam entry list. Will be tough to defend last years points.

I don't think last years points count to her ranking as she did better in 16 other tournaments, but i may be wrong....

Quite surprised Clijsters has chose to miss this event since she nearly almost used to play here before her retirement.
Perhaps she thought picking up the title in Brisbane and then having a week off would be better preparation...

The draw is out:
(1)Serena Williams USA v BYE
Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez ESP v (wc)Justine Henin BEL
Q v (wc)Casey Dellacqua AUS
Elena Vesnina RUS v (8)Vera Zvonareva RUS
(4)Caroline Wozniacki DEN v Na Li CHN
Samantha Stosur AUS v Flavia Pennetta ITA
Aravane Rezai FRA v Q
Q v (7)Jelena Jankovic SRB

(6)Victoria Azarenka BLR v Sabine Lisicki GER
Nadia Petrova RUS v Q
Q v Dominika Cibulkova SVK
Alisa Kleybanova RUS v (3)Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS
(5)Elena Dementieva RUS v Francesca Schiavone ITA
Virginie Razzano FRA v Daniela Hantuchova SVK
Q v Agnieszka Radwanska POL
(2)Dinara Safina RUS v BYE

Given the strength of the field, Daniela really could have done worse. Look at that section with Wozniacki, Pennetta, Stosur and Na!
Razzano is an interesting player to watch this year as she had a career year last year, really out of nowhere. I would wager she's a prime candidate to regress this year (see Jie Zheng last year). At that, even the "old" Razzano was a handful, so Daniela has her work cut out for her. As for a possible matchup with Elena in round two, well, at least Daniela will have ample time to get ready for Melbourne.

Dementieva lost to Lisicki 6-4 6-1 in Perth so anything is possible...
But hopefully a win against Razzano at least. If she goes into Melbourne with three wins and two losses under her belt then I think she'll be pretty confident of making a run there.

Williams versus Henin will be interesting (providing Henin gets through her first round).
Having said that, Justine is getting a bit of a beating off Clijsters in the Brisbane final (her first real tough opponant of her come-back). So perhaps Henin is not quite at near-peak as the papers would suggest...

Not any more, Henin 3-2 up in the 3rd!

As for Daniela, I think this is a perfect draw considering the field. Like Szavay in Birsbane, this match against Razzano is a great chance for Daniela to get revenge for the two losses last year. I really hope Daniela can get through this match as it will give her a lot of confidence for Melbourne and then playing Dementieva will be a good marker to see how good Daniela is atm.

Daniela 1st on centre court tonight for Europe!

Clijsters(1) d. Henin 63 46 76(6)

That was the most incredible match I have ever seen! So many twists and turns...Williams sisters watch out!

Williams versus Henin will be interesting (providing Henin gets through her first round).

Well Laura Robson beat Sanchez Martinez in straight sets earlier today in the Hopman Cup final so I don't think Henin will have any difficulties surpassing the Spaniard.

As for the draw, it's ok. It was always going to be pretty tricky and Razzano has proven more than an annoying foe in recent meetings between the two, but it is still a match that Daniela can win and playing Dementieva will be a good barometer (as mentioned previously) however, she must beat Razzano first before we can contemplate that match up against Dementieva and with it being so early in the season there is no guarantees in a match like this, especially involving Daniela.

It's a reasonable enough draw given the field. Razzano's beaten Daniela the last three times they played so she'll be a tough opponent. Razzano's a streaky sort of player. When she's on she can beat anyone, but her game doesn't give her too much of a margin for error as she hits the ball very flat, goes for the lines and tries to hit lots of winners. When she's on form she's tough to play against; but if she's off form, her technique goes awry and she'll make errors. Her form since Wimbledon hasn't been that great.

It's going to be a test for Daniela and a win here would be a boost going into the Australian Open.

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.
