Ai retired from her match with Petrova. Any idea what happened, hopefully she is still in the doubles with Daniela

not the best way for Ai to end her singles career. I really wanted her to beat Petrova.

Japan's Ai Sugiyama was forced to retire from the final singles match of her 17-year career at the Pan Pacific Open on Monday due to illness.
The 34-year-old was losing to Russian Nadia Petrova 6-0 2-1 after just 39 minutes when she pulled out feeling unwell.

if it was due to illness, doubles might be in doubt :?

It's a good solid win by Daniela. After an initial struggle, she came through the match easily enough and she had a nice run of games to win each set: 4-0 in the first and 4-1 in the second so that's good. She had to face a lot of BPs but most of them came in her first service game. Daniela saved most of the BPs she faced but she still had to face a lot and hopefully that's a one off and not a red flag like the low BP conversation rate against Scheepers was as Daniela had the same problem against Date Krumm. Daniela BP conversion rate was better than in Seoul at 5/7 (71%) so that's positive.

Radwanska beat Makarova so she'll be Daniela's next opponent and that'll be a tough match and Daniela will have to play well to win it. Kuznetsova lost so that opens up the draw to whoever wins Daniela's next match but she has to beat Radwanksa first.

It's such a shame that Ai's singles career ended the way it did. Hopefully her doubles career ends on a high note.

Daniela's the third match up on Center tomorrow so it'll be televised.

Well, she's the third match on the Eurosport coverage.

Good win to start into a tournament. Hopefully Daniela can show us another good performance against Radwanska.

BTW also Safina lost her second round match.

Venus is also out, losing to Pavlyuchenkova in two close sets.

Good win by Daniela. It's nice to see her bounce back. Although i think we all suspected she would.

As for her chances against Radwanska. She beat her earlier this year so you'd have to think she's in with a fighting chance. When Daniela was playing really solid tennis in early 2008 she beat Radwanska pretty convincingly. I think this will be a good bench mark to see where Daniela's game is at. She'll have to be consistent if she wants any hope of an easy victory so i think this will be the perfect test for Daniela. She's had so many 3 setters against people she shouldn't have had 3 setters against this year. It'd be nice to see her play really well against a quality opponent. Restore a little bit of the faith. :D

the match wozniacki - wozniak has only now started, so i think eurosport will not show daniela's match, because it will start too late :(
