Daniela will play qualifier Klara Zakopalova (ranked 70 in the world) in the opening round. They have met once before in Linz in 2005, Daniela coming through in three very tight sets; 6-4 6-7[4] 7-6[9].

Off topic: Maria Sharapova will miss the Australian Open due to her shoulder injury, and therefore the opportunity to defend her title. The three-time Grand Slam champion has not played since Montreal in August, and has consequently missed the Olympics, the US Open, the Sony Ericsson Championships and now the Australian Open.
This means Sharapova will be barely inside the top-twenty when the rankings come out after the Australian Open.

Poor Shazza.

Why have they already taken off the points from last years Sydney results in the world rankings?

The ranking points have also been new calculated, because of the new tour-systhem I think.

Also the ranking of the ATP has been updated.

Results:

Singles - First Round
(1) Serena Williams (USA) d. Samantha Stosur (AUS) 6:3 6:7(4) 7:5
(5) Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) d. Peng Shuai (CHN) 3:6 6:1 6:3
(6) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) d. Sybille Bammer (AUT) 6:4 6:3

Doubles - First Round
(3) Peschke/Raymond (CZE/USA)
d. Hantuchova/Sugiyama (SVK/JPN) 6:2 4:6 11:9

Tough opening matches for Serena and Svetlana. Quite comfortably win for Agnieszka.
A very close loss in doubles for Daniela and Ai, but a great performance against one of the best teams on the tour.

Serena faced four match points in the final set and could have easily been dumped out in the opening round so it was a good match for her to come through and win.
Regarding Peng Shuai, she now has a new coach who sees great potential in her, so I think she could be one of the biggest movers inside the top-fifty this year; definately a top-thirty player in my oppinion.
Radwanska's win was comfortable enough but against Bammer who was playing her first match of the year. Radwanska is definately not at her best so I think Daniela has a chance of a win if she gets through her opening round match.
A shame that Daniela and Ai lost in the first round this week, but it was a tough draw, and it is still just their second tournament back together. Do you know if Peschke and Raymond are now playing together? Because this week Stosur is playing with Stubbs. Have they all switched partners within that foursome?

Zakopalova's a good opponent for Daniela's first match as she is someone that Daniela should beat easily enough. Zakopalova doesn't have much power so as long as Daniela doesn't make too many errors, Daniela should win. Because Zakopalova will always try to make Daniela play the extra shot, then it's going to be a test of Daniela's groundstrokes, concentration and confidence.

It's disappointing that Daniela and Ai lost such a close match in the doubles, but it was to good opponents and it also gave Daniela a warm-up match and a chance to get used to the conditions before the singles.

Have a great time in Australia, Patti, and hopefully you see Daniela win her matches.

I respectfully disagree with your analysis, chungwit. Klára is more of an offensive player than a defensive one. She has at least as much firepower as Daniela, her forehand could cause Daniela a lot of trouble, but that's a coin toss as her groundstrokes are very flat and have little margin for error. You never know what kind of performance you can expect from her. Surprisingly she isn't such a good defender as you may think, she will get some balls back but those are mostly short ones and should be easy for Daniela to put away. Her worst shot is serve imo, which is rather inconsistent, quite often she struggles with the ball toss and because of it speed of her serves is irregular, one 1st serve is 165 km/h fast, the next one 130 km/h. Daniela should try to start strongly and capitalize on Klára's propensity to mental lapses when things aren't going her way.

It does look like an irregular serve.

Looks like she will play soon. Match ahead of her, Llodra bageled Gremelmayr in the first set. 84% first serves, 75% of total points, only lost two points on serve. ----- oh he gave a game away 1-1
