Safina v Dementieva for the Olympic Gold, I am a fan of Dinara but I just look at Dinara getting to a grand slam final and winning titles, and I just wonder if Dani is EVER going to have a season like that.

I agree, it seems Dinara has come from a similar position to Daniela in terms of performance and ranking from last season yet it is the Russian who is getting the top-class results this year (i.e. grand slam final, good Olympics). I know Daniela has been injured but I don't think all her results can be blamed on this. Even at the Australian Open when she was at her peak she couldn't win from a love-set up against Ivanovic. I don't no whether she has the same nerve as Safina.
I think Safina will win gold and will probably be one of the top four-five favourites for the US Open title. Maybe we will see Daniela in a similar positon next year but I doubt it to be honest.

If Safina can do it then I definitely think Daniela can.

you're right. Daniela can do that.
I hope she can make it inside the top 10 again.
do you think she can make it to the top 10 before the year ends?

Daniela is definately a top-ten player. I don't think she will get back in the top ten again this year simply because she has so many points to defend following the US Open and because there is a large gap between herself and Radwanksa (currently 9th) and Zvonareva (currently 11th). Zvonareva will gain points from her semi-final run at the Olympics and will most likely move into 10th soon and overtake Chakvetadze which would mean Daniela's best hope would be a year-end ranking of 11th.
Daniela's best chance at a run back into the top-ten will probably come after the Australian Open 2009, where she has very few points to defend in a period of time where there are lots available in tournaments such as Dubai and Doha. I am certain she will return to the top-ten but I think she has possibly missed her chance of a return to the top-five. If she had been 100% healthy this year then I think she may have sneaked into the top-five by the end of the Autumn because she would have had lots of points from the end of 2007 and lots from the 2008 season which probably would have combined to make a high ranking.
At present only Dinara Safina is taking advantage of Henin's retirement, Sharapova's absence, Ivanovic's lack of form and Jankovic's inconsistent performances.

Dementieva won the Gold medal and while reading an article on how she really prioritized this event and prepared hard for it I couldnt help thinking this could have been Daniela's story.. :|

Congratulations to Elena. I'm really happy that she was able to win the Gold medal. She really deserves it.
