Hantuchova and Schndyer in Linz qualification
Linz - Thursday, 06.10.2016, 14:35

Two very prominent tennis ladies will give glory in qualifying for the Generali Ladies Linz weekend.

Daniela Hantuchova and Patty Schnyder will each receive a wild card. The 33-year-old Hantuchova won the 2007 Linz final against the four years older than Swiss. While the Slovakian was number 5 in the world ever, managed Schnyder in WTA ranking position. 7

Tournament director Sandra Reichel: "Patty and Daniela are favorite player of mine!"

Two former world-class players who have graduated to the finals in "Generali Ladies Linz" in 2007 celebrating, nine years later a reunion of Linz Ladies Tennis Classic: Daniela Hantuchova and Patty Schnyder!

Reminder: Hantuchova won the final against Schnyder by 6 2007: 2: 4,. 6 The Slovakian has reached 2003 fifth their best world ranking position on the WTA Tour Hantuchova won seven individual titles. Currently, the 33-year-old is ranked 170. For the "Generali Ladies 2016" is replaced by Hantuchova of tournament director Sandra Reichel a wildcard for the qualification, as Patty Schnyder.

The 37-year-old Swiss is already today, Thursday, arrived in Linz. Schnyder (Best career ranking Pl. 7 in November 2005, currently 305) has won eleven WTA single title, they came to the French Open from professional tennis back in 2011 and celebrated a comeback in summer, 2015. "Patty and Daniela are favorite player of mine, I am pleased to see both again in Linz," says Sandra Reichel. Schnyder is, as previously reported, to take not only the individual, but also in a double - as a partner of Sandra Klemenschits.

We'll see how Daniela does here. The lowest ranked non-Austrian in the main draw is Lisicki at 105 (Haas got a wildcard at 144) while Daniela's currently 239 and needed a wildcard for qualifying so whoever she plays is very likely to be ranked above her. At the same time, she's done well in Linz in the past and she can beat anyone she's likely to get in qualifying but we'll see what the draws like and of course, any opponent has to be respected. A repeat of 2007 would be amazing.

I remember the very pleasant surprise 2007 Linz was. Even Daniela was a bit stunned, particularly as to how the win got her into the WTA Championships.
Got a kick out of the gushing comments of the tournament director. If we assume for argument's sake that the 2007 final drew a sellout crowd, you don't suppose that the qualie draw would have Dani and Schnyder in the same half, maybe even the first round! Nah, that kind of stuff never happens.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Daniela starts with Lauren Davis who's seeded second in qualifying. It's one of the harder starts Daniela could have had as Davis has beaten Daniela before although Daniela beat her in Sydney qualifying in January. The winner plays either Julia Boserup or Rebecca Sramkova.

A really good and hard-fought win by Daniela. She had to come back from a set and 3-1 down to win, this is such a good win for her as she's lost so many matches after losing the first set so to make a come back like this is pretty special. Daniela got broken in the first game of the match and the rest of the first set went with serve although Daniela had to save 4 BPs in one game before holding. Davis then broke Daniela in the third game of the second set before holding to go 3-1 up. Daniela held and then broke Davis to go 3-3. Neither player had a BP in the rest of the set although Daniela ha 30 all & then deuce when Davis was serving to stay in the set a 6-5. Daniela was 6-3 up in the tiebreak (albeit with only one mini break) before Davis got back to 6-6. Daniela won her service point to get her fourth set point at 7-6 before winning it on Davis's serve. Daniela was able to break Davis in the third game of the third set on her 3rd BP before breaking again to go 5-2 up. She then served it out to 30 on her second match point. Daniela didn't face a BP after the third game of the second set so that's pleasing that Daniela's serve got better as the match went on, either that or Davis's returns got worse.

Daniela got stronger as the match went on as Indoors is a good surface for Daniela so she could dictate a lot of rallies and wear Davis down with her groundstrokes while she doesn't really have to worry about Davis hitting too many winners.

Daniela plays Julia Boserup in the next round after she beat Sramkova. We'll have to see how much this match took out of Daniela as it went on for 2 hours 32 minutes so hopefully Daniela can recover although Boserup will be a different challenge to Davis.

Daniela's the first match on Court 1 tomorrow, 12 noon start.

The Linz twitter posted that Daniela was second on Centre Court, but the WTA site has Daniela first on Court 1.

I've got to admit that second on Centre is much better for Daniela as it gives her a little more time to rest and it's a court she used to while first on Court 1 benefits Boserup who played there today, and had a shorter match that started earlier so she'll have had more time to rest and will be used to the conditions. I don't think the rest will make too much difference to Boserup but I think Daniela could do with as much recovery time as she can get.

Edit: Daniela played second on Centre Court, as was originally reported. I don't know why the WTA site had her playing first on Court 1 yesterday.

Wowwee! An old fashioned 3 setta Danielathon special!
I'm vacationing in San Diego, and for some reason the WTA Live Scores site wasn't providing Linz scores, so I am more grateful than ever for your detailed report, Chungwit. It's heartwarming to see our gal pull one out for the first time in awhile, and has lost absolute zero of her guts and fighting spirit. Now she goes for #560. Cool!

Let's Go, Daniela!

Another really good win by Daniela and her second comeback from a set and a break down. Daniela was actually 2-0 up in the first set bur Boserup broke right back for 2-1 before breaking again in the ninth game to go 5-4 up and then serving out. Daniela also started the second set 2-0 before Boserup won three games in a row to go 3-2 up before Daniela broke back for 3-3 on her fourth BP. That was the turning point of the match because that switched the momentum and got Daniela back on serve as it would have been really difficult for her to comeback from a set and 4-2 down. The next three games went with serve until Daniela broke Boserup when she was serving to stay in the set at 5-4. That also meant that Daniela was serving first in the final set.

The third set only had one break when Daniela broke Boserup to love in the sixth game to go 4-2 up, that was her only BP and she took it. Daniela had had to save a BP in the third game which she held on her 3rd GP and she also had to save another BP in a long seventh game which she held on her fifth GP for 5-2. Daniela served it out to 0 on her next service game. Daniela held her serve and her nerve in some tough games in the final set and she was able to take her opportunity on Boserup's serve because Boserup held fairly easily the rest of the time while she put pressure on Daniela's serve a few times. Daniela was able to take her chances and win the big points because this was a tough match for her.

One thing that was especially good about this match was that Daniela served 16 aces and only 5 DFs, including 6 aces to only one DF in the third set.

Daniela will play either Mandy Minella or Amra Sadikovic.

Daniela will play Mandy Minella tomorrow after she beat Sadikovic by retirement. Sadikovic was actually a set & 3-1 up so Minella did get a bit lucky. At the same time, she's seeded sixth in qualifying and she had a good win against Soler-Espinosa in the first round so she's got to be respected.

Daniela is always so considerate of me. Since I wasn't able to follow the Davis match, she replayed it for me today! Thank you, young lady!

16 Aces :!: :!: :!:

When did that last happen? Goodness gracious land sakes alive! Do you remember when she once lamented that she could use a new right arm? What, did she borrow one from John Isner for today? I would love to see a comment from Dani about this, but newspaper articles don't exactly free flow from qualie semifinals. My gosh, her first 3 points of the match were aces.

The biggest reason this went the distance, and why Daniela got it under control as she went along, was points converted on 2nd serve. She was 0-9 and 2-16 at various points. She ended up 16-35, 13-18 in the final set. Daniela never ceases to be remarkable. #560 is in the books!

Let's Go, Daniela!

This is disappointing. It just seems like Daniela ran out of steam after two three-setters in the previous two days while Minella had a straight sets win and a retirement so she would have been fresher.

Unlike yesterday, when Daniela did such a great job of winning the important points and did so well on serve, this time Minella won most of the important points - she won 6/8 BPs although Daniela was 3/4 and Daniela's serve wasn't as potent as yesterday with only 3 aces compared with 7 DFs.

The first six games of the first set went with serve before Daniela was broken twice for Minella to take it 6-3. Daniela was 4-2 up in the second set before Minella fought back to 5-4 up before Daniela held and broke to serve for the set but Minella broke her to love to take the set into the tiebreak. Daniela raced into a 6-2 lead in the tiebreak before Minella got it back to 6-5, including winning 2 points on Daniela's serve before Daniela clinched the set on Minella's serve. I really wonder how much this took out of Daniela because she should have won the second set more easily than she did andit seems she had a letdown afterwards Minella started the third set with a break to go 2-0 up. Daniela fought back to 2-2 before she was broken in the fifth game which was the decisive game in the match as the put Minella ahead and there were no more breaks. Daniela had to GPs in that game but Minella broke on her 3rd BP. That was the last break of the match as Daniela never got more than 30 on Minella's serve while Minella only won one point in Daniela's remaining two service games.

This is the first tournament since she won Pattaya last year where she's had two comeback wins in the same tournament as so often over that past year and a half she's lost the match after losing the first set.

Minella plays Flipkens who Daniela played well against in New Haven.

This was a match that was within reach, but Daniela never seemed to be in control of things and it slithered away. Overall, as you said, Chungwit, an encouraging weekend with the comebacks and the out of nowhere bushel of aces.
Two questions:
1. Has Daniela ever gained into the main draw as a lucky loser?
2. What has become of Benji and eddy? I miss you guys!

Let's Go, Daniela!
