We'll see how Daniela does here. It's going to be really weird seeing her in an ITF for the first time since 2000 but it's a sign of how things have gone for her over the past year that she's not seeded here. If she plays well then she's got a great chance here but she's lost to some of the players here in the past so she can't overlook anyone. It's a bit of a strange situation as Daniela's not seeded but she's the biggest star there and would be a big scalp for her opponent. It's indoors so that should help Daniela as the conditions should be quick. The fact that she's here tells about how Daniela's fared over the past year but it also tells us how much she loves tennis and playing.

Daniela certainly did try to avoid this. (Ironic....Halep has always made me sick to my stomach :D)

Since it has been so long and 2000 was well before I discovered Dani, let me ask the dumb question of the day: Should she get a win or more here, do ITF wins count toward her career total?

Let's Go, Daniela!

Draws out and Daniela starts with Oceane Dodin of France. Her best result was beating Jankovic at the US Open last year and that's easily her best result, she's had a few wins on the ITF circuit so she'll have a bit of confidence and Daniela will be a big scalp so she'll be motivated. The winner plays either Mathilde Johansson or a qualifier. It's a reasonable enough draw and it gives Daniela a chance to go on a run but Dodin has to be respected and Daniela has to take things one match at a time.Singles draw.png

Daniela will get credited for any wins that have ranking points or Fed Cup, so she'll get points and wins for this.

Much obliged, Chungwit.
After what halfwit Halep pulled, Daniela won't have much time to rest and adjust to the time difference, exactly what I wanted her to avoid. I would say that there's a higher percentage chance she withdraws than she picks up a win here.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Yuck. Dodin is one player I didn't want Daniela to draw-erratic but a very powerful ball-striker. She played Pliskova very close at the Australian last year.

That's a good point about the match-up of styles, Benji. Daniela's best performances this year have come against retrievers in Falconi & Davis in Sydney and also against Nara where she could dictate most of the points but she's struggled badly against big hitters who can put her on the defensive.

The way I'm looking at Miami is that Daniela got to work with one of the top players and coaches around for a few days. Croissy-Beaubourg's just outside Paris so it would be easy for her to get a flight from Miami and she'd be able to go straight to her tournament hotel after she gets there so she should be rested. It's not like Pattaya to Dubai.

Makes sense, Chungwit. But even if I take lack of rest off the table, Halep is still a halfwit.

No match for Dani on Monday, so that's more R & R.

Let's Go, Daniela!

That is confirmed. Daniela will try to hit it in the Oceana while standing on a pier on Court Central, not before 6:00 PM (noontime in New York....yay!). 4 matches precede hers, beginning at 11:00 AM. Here's hoping :!:

On the ITF live scores, Dodin is listed as ambidextrous. Really.

The players exchanged early breaks, then Daniela is broken again, down 2-3. Sigh.
And again. 2-5.
1st set 2-6 Dodin. Unending depression. Stats are lopsided.

I tried turning off my Kindle for 10 minutes to see if that might change things. And it did. It got worse. 0-4 until Daniela held serve for the second time today after being broken 5 straight times. Dodin has 9 aces (Dani has 2).

Wait a minute, it's stopped hailing. Daniela breaks then holds, 3-4.
Breaks again...4-4!
OMG Down 0-40, Daniela wins 5 straight points to hold, 5-4!!

But....reality hammers us in the solar plexus again. Rodin sweeps the last three games, 5-7.
Daniela did save a match point.
Is it ever gonna end?

Let's Go, Daniela!

Daniela lost 6-2 7-5

She was 6-2 4-0 down and got it 5-4 30-30 but from there Dodin won 8 of the last 10 points of the match.

Off to Poland next if she still wants to play.

Very sad...but I guess the power is too much for Daniela these days...

Oh dear, yet another loss. Dodin did the damage winning all these games from the middle of the first set to give herself a big lead a big lead in the second. Daniela was able to fight back and go 5-4 up but it seems like the effort of fighting back took a lot out of Daniela and she couldn't do much about Dodin's surge the end.

I'm going to want Dodin to win this tournament because that will make this result a little better.

Very sad...but I guess the power is too much for Daniela these days... Dodin hit eleven aces compared to two by Daniela.

Some of Lou Reed's solo stuff's not bad, by the way.
