Another good win by Daniela. She controlled the match throughout, her stats are good and she broke Burnett's serve six times out of eight, the only minor quibble would be that she got broken a couple of times but it's another strong win that will boost her confidence.

Next up is number one seed Kozlova who will be a lot tougher than either of the players Daniela's played.

A little sweet emotion! Daniela was dominant again today. After getting broke in the opening game, she ran off the next eight in a row, then after a lull, took the last four. Her first serve was not good (as it has not been for a long time now and likely will always be), but she did conjure up three aces and her 2nd serve numbers were good (12-19). So #547 is recorded. Kozlova won 7-5 7-5, so she's next. Liking this!

Let's Go, Daniela!

I'm very surprised that I'm first to comment when today's match ended 2 1/2 hours ago.
But it's very, very good news. Dani is in the main draw. She took Kozlova down 6-4 6-4. And (are you sitting down)....her serve was not broken the whole match!
Almost forgot....#548 for our gal! :D

Let's Go, Daniela!

:wav: :wav: A really good result and performance. Daniela's serve was really strong (or Kozlova's returns were bad) but Daniela got 66% 1st serves in winning 76% while she won 63% on her second serve and saved both the BPs she faced. She was clutch on BPs as she won 2/3 she had against Kozlova. She did have a match point on Kozlova's serve at 5-3 but Kozlova held but Daniela served it out in the next game and clinched it on her first MP. Three straight sets win against opponents that increased in quality with every round and this last win was the best as it was against a higher ranked opponent and Daniela won pretty much all of the crucial points.

Daniela's got 3rd seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round. Daniela beat Ostapenko in Sydney although Ostapenko was coming off a devastating loss in Auckland. Since then Ostapenko's got to the final in Doha but her results the rest of the year have been pretty modest and she lost in the first round of San Antonio and Miami so we'll see what happens. The winner plays either Kristyna Pliskova or Heather Watson.

When Daniela wins three days straight, I recover some of my whimsicality. In researching Burnett, I found that she won an ITF a few years ago as a qualifier, taking 8 matches in 9 or 10 days, an amazing feat no matter what. That reminded me that in 2001 in New York (the Bronx), Daniela won the tourney the same way. So, even with the knowledge that she was 18 then and almost 33 now....Why Not?

Let's Go, Daniela!

Pliskova beat Watson in three sets so she'll play the winner of Daniela's match.

God that was pretty miserable. Daniela just looked so slow and underpowered out there. Ostapenko played fairly well but she didn't really have to do much. She overpowered Daniela and it was obvious from the middle of the first set that Ostapenko was going to win as she was hitting harder and moving better. Most of the rallies lasted only a few shots before Ostapenko hit a winner or Daniela made an error. Daniela's serve seemed so slow and Ostapenko was all over it and most of the time it seemed like she'd blast return winners from Daniela's serve, there wasn't too much placement in the serve and Ostapenko hardly had to move to be in position to return. Daniela only won 3/19 points on her first serve and she didn't hold once in the match. Daniela just looked so forlorn out there. This must be so depressing for her as she just wasn't competitive at all and just had no chance. She is going to be 33 in a couple of weeks and she looked old against a younger, stronger opponent.

Daniela tossed back-to-back perfect games on serve, I guess. Never broken yesterday, never holds today.
Your report is downright depressing, Chungwit. Glad I didn't see Dani look and play so bad.
She is pushing 33. That's the elephant in the room. Let me add another possible reason she may have felt and looked so sluggish. On June 19 last year at Birmingham, Daniela was beaten by Lisicki in the quarter final. It was her fourth match in four days. Between June 19 and today, a span of 41 weeks, she has done that once, in Sydney. So, added to her age, mileage on the body and all that, it can be argued that she's match starved, making it logical that she conked out in a 4th contest in 4 days. While we all know how much she works out and practices, I'm not saying anything we don't know by stating it's not the same as a steady stream of matches. In 227 days between June 20 last year and her win over the 14 year old kid on Saturday, Daniela played 15 singles matches, losing 11 times in her first and only match. 15 contests in 227 days....that's astonishing! Then 4 in 4 days all of a sudden. I don't know how to get Dani more matches, which she needs, but it looks like that was a factor today.

Let's Go, Daniela!
