Apparently Daniela had a wrist injury to contend with last year.

Daniela Hantuchova shook off a torrid 2014 with a demolition of second seed Sara Errani in the Auckland Classic first round.

Hantuchova saw her world ranking plummet to 62 in 2014, losing in the first round of 12 of her 24 tournaments, though she had wrist injury issues to contend with.

She arrived in New Zealand on the back of four straight first round defeats but she looked in superb form against the Italian clay court specialist Errani winning 6-3 6-2 in 75 minutes.

Daniela Hantuchova shook off a torrid 2014 that saw her year-end ranking drop to its lowest point since 2002 with a demolition of second seed Sara Errani in the Auckland Classic first round on Monday.

The towering Hantuchova thundered powerful groundstrokes past the much shorter Italian, who had been battling a rib injury before the tournament, to clinch a 6-3, 6-2 victory in 75 minutes.

The 31-year-old Slovakian was bothered by a troubling wrist injury in 2014 but also lost in the first round at 12 of her 24 tournaments, including the last four of the year.

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.

This is the first I have seen about a wrist injury, same for you guys? Daniela's amazing, never makes excuses. Meantime Erroneous was moaning about her rib problem in every preview article for Auckland I read. Mushbrain.
So great to learn that the melodious backhand is back! I remember watching Daniela warming up for her double bagel match at Carlsbad and hitting her backhand over and over. It was mesmerizing. It's the sweetest shot on the tour. And now I'm finding out that it wasn't at it's best then. Absolutely can't wait to see it now! :)
So why not knock off another #2 seed today!?

Let's Go, Daniela!

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Daniela Hantuchova and Sloane Stephens, who both took on new coaches during the off-season, kicked off their years in style with dominant victories in the first round of the ASB Classic on Monday.

Hantuchova is now working with Carlos Rodriguez, who previously coached Grand Slam champions Justine Henin and Li Na. Her first match under him ended in a 6-3, 6-2 win over No.2 seed Sara Errani.

"After the pre-season, I couldn't wait to be on court to see where my game was," Hantuchova said. "I was nicely surprised. It seemed like everything worked out.

"Sara is a great fighter and a great player. To have a draw like that in the first round is not easy. I knew I had to be extremely focused for every point because she is very good at turning matches around. I felt like I was moving well and tactically playing the way that I worked on with Carlos."

Hantuchova is competing in Auckland for the first time since 2007.

"I'm so pleased to be back," Hantuchova said. "There are a lot of changes. I'm pleasantly surprised by the facilities. The gym is fantastic. I've gotten a chance to travel around and went to Waiheke the other day. It's been a lot of fun."

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.

Schiavone lost to Radwanska, so Daniela won't have to go up against her doubles partner. Of course, she now faces someone who's on a roll through qualifying and today, but that's nothing new.
Czechmates win, 6-4 6-4. Daniela and Schiavone put up quite a fight, even led 3-0 in the second. But in each set, they lost a deciding point at 4-4, and that's why their opponents are as good as they are. Not the worst thing if we want Dani to make a deep run here.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Radwanska beat Daniela the last two times they've played and she'll have momentum from having come through qualifying so she's got to be respected and she'll be confident. If Daniela plays like she did against Errani then she's got a great chance but every match is different and she has to play at a similar level against Radwanska.

Doubles is a tough loss as like Alex said, Daniela and Schiavone lost deciding points at 4-4 in both sets and Hlavackova & Hradecka only won 6 more points in the match: 62 to 56. Hlavackova & Hradecka went 4/7 on Bps while Daniela & Francesca were 2/11. Hlavackova & Hradecka won the biggest points and that's why they won the match. Daniela & Francesca were competitive with them but couldn't take their chances. They've lost their last two matches together but both were to slam winning teams (Makarova & Vesnina won the US Open after beating them) so Daniela & Francesca could be a good team going forward but we'll see if Daniela's going to stay with Schiavone or have another partner.

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.

Off-season training pays off for Daniela Hantuchova as she dismisses second seed
Jan 5, 2015

Daniela Hantuchova has advanced to the second round after defeating second seed Sara Errani. Hantuchova credits the success to tough pre-season training.

"Always after the pre-season you can’t wait to be on court to see where your game is, and I was nicely surprised by myself today. I was just really looking forward to being on the court and starting the new year on a good note. It seemed like everything worked out pretty well today.

"Always after the pre-season you can’t wait to be on court to see where your game is, and I was nicely surprised by myself today. I was just really looking forward to being on the court and starting the new year on a good note. It seemed like everything worked out pretty well today.

How much work have you been doing in the off-season?

"A lot. I was in China for three weeks, because I started to work with Carlos Rodriguez, and we had the IPTL after that which was a lot of travelling but so much fun, then again in Dubai, so it’s been a lot of work."

You had quite a tough run at the end of last year. Does that make it more enjoyable to have a good win like this today?

"Yeah definitely, it was actually good in a way that the injury forced me to stop the year a little bit earlier, so I actually had a bit more time to recover. When I started to work physically, I was really fresh and ready…Carlos is an amazing coach, I’ve been on the tour for 15 years and I’ve never seen anything like it."

What in particular were you pleased about with your game today?

"I think just the overall intensity. Sara is obviously a great fighter and a great player. For a first round to have a draw like that is not easy, so I knew I had to be extremely focused for every single point because she’s very good at turning matches around. I felt that I was moving well, and just really technically playing the way we worked on with Carlos."

I am so happy she seems so motivated!

Do we like her chances against Radwanska's little sister? If she plays like R1, she should cruise, but yeah, Daniela is not know for carrying her form from match to match. New year new patterns? 8-)

6-1 first set, very in control and fending off bps with great winners.

Second set filled with UE and less than stellar serve, down 1-4 now.

Come one daniela!

So many misfires, the composure of the 1st set is lost 2-5 now... damn

Loses 2nd set 3-6, she's even getting aced by little Radwanska.

I'm going to bed, hope I see a good result tomorrow.

Lost 1-6 in the 3rd I didn't see the match but looks like she gradually played worse as the match continued after a fantastic start whereas Radwanska played consistently. Sucks big time but at least she won a round. I hope she enters Hobart...

That is very disappointing... This was a very beatable opponent. Urzula didn't do anything special in the second set other than staying somewhat consistent, but Daniela's game just regresed, especially her bh; I imagine the 3rd was the same.
