Not to put a downer on things but not looking forward to this tournament due to QF points to defend. But hopefully Daniela can surprise us and have an amazing 2 weeks. |

Hopefully Daniela can get a decent draw and win her first match and take it from there. The draw opened up for her last year and she was able to take advantage of it. It's very unlikely that her draw will be as good this year so she'll have to raise her level. It would have been great if she was seeded but she isn't. One thing is that she only has Moscow and Australian Open to defend between now and April and she should be seeded for Hong Kong the week after this. I just hope that Daniela can be fit and healthy and that the week off has regenerated her and that she can play good tennis here. |

Daniela has indeed got a good draw: Obviously first round vs Oprandi will be tough but defintitely winnable and Cornet hasn't been in that great form since Wimbledon. 3rd round is a definite possibility if a good Daniela shows up. Safarova vs Babos Q vs Voegele Oprandi vs Hantuchova (wc)Hesse vs Cornet Vinci vs Ormaechea Begu vs Soler-Espinosa Peng vs Zheng Fichman vs Radwanska |

It's not the worst draw in the world and it's always good to avoid a seed in the first round. Oprandi beat Daniela in Marrakesh so she has to be respected but she's done pretty much nothing since. Daniela has to bring her best tennis from the start. Cornet's had some great results this year, she's beaten Serena Williams twice and she won Katowice but she's also lost to some very low ranked players this year, it depends on which Cornet turns up. Safarova's been playing very well recently so she'd be tough but Daniela has to win two matches before that. Daniela has to take things one match at a time and focus on beating Oprandi. |

Of all the players Daniela has lost to over the years that leave you shaking your head, Oprandi is high up there. Yeah, she got hot that week in Marrakech. But she's 0-7 on the regular tour since, has lost to people on the ITF that are only known to their parents, has never won a regular tour title and is #157 in the world. Daniela has not drawn who she too often does, a player in form who went a long way in last week's event or a qualie that won 2-3 matches the last few days or a top 20 player. Plus she's played Oprandi this year, knows what she does and has a revenge motive. Put it all together, and how does that leave me? Terrified! A loss here would be harder to swallow than lima beans. And none of us wants to know to what nether depths the loss of points with a 1st round defeat would plunge her in the rankings. That said, if Dani plays like she can, she wins. I can only hope it ends up as simple as that. |

Funny post Alex about the lima beans haha! Each round Daniela wins will up her ranking at least 5-10 places up from the depths of outside the top 60, so we all need to rally extra hard for Daniela at this tournament! |

For some reason, the other day an article appeared in the New York Times about Hingis and her comeback. (I guess that's All The News From Last Year That's Fit To Print! ) Daniela was interviewed for it and had her normal glowing tributes for Hingis and said they remain good friends. Hingis, per her norm, spoke only about herself. Something happened in Montreal, though, that shows that they must truly still be chums. You probably are aware, but if not, it's worth posting, and it's actually a wee bit funny. During Dani's loss to Caroline, a power failure struck Jarry Park. As it was an afternoon match, play continued. But there was no scoreboard, no referee microphone, and no electric eye on the lines. A close call went against Daniela. Hingis was in the seats, apparently rooting for Dani. She frantically gestured to her to challenge the call. Daniela looked at her, threw her arms up and yelled "I Can't!" That reminded me of how our gal always speaks to the genius of Hingis. Not this time; she gets the dunce cap! Daniela's loyalty to Hingis can be baffling to me and I'm sure to you guys, but it does prove one thing: She's a better person than I am. |

Daniela & Schiavone have been drawn against 4th seeds Makarova & Vesnina in the 1st round of the doubles. The winner plays either Cetkovska/Piter or MIn/Oudin. |

No an ideal doubles draw to say the least but Makarova/Vesnina haven't been invincible this year and is good that Daniela will play them finally after Lucic withdrew with Daniela before they were meant to play them 2R of Wimbledon. |
