The draws for the Mutua Madrid Open male and female competitions will take place on Friday the 2nd of May.

From 14:00 CET the best players on the women’s circuit will know what paths they will have to take in order to fight it out for the crown on the Madrid clay. For yet another year in the Spanish capital, the combined Masters 1000 title will be the object of these players’ affections. Taking part in the ceremonies for the female draw, which will take place on the ground floor of the Caja Mágica, will be Simona Halep, the current world no. 5, and Tita Torró, the recent champion in Marrakech.

Daniela's got her only clay points to defend here and as this is a mandatory premier it's important that she does, especially as these points will be useful for a seeding for Roland Garros. She'll have had a week to prepare and she's had some wins in Charleston and Marrakech which will have given her some confidence but the standard of opponent will be a lot higher here than was the case in Charleston or Marrakech. At the same time, she did well here last year and coming back can give her the inspiration to do well. We'll have to see what the draw is and hopefully Daniela gets a decent draw.

To defend the Madrid points, Daniela needs to travel a rough road. She opens with Vinci, and in theory, the next two opponents would be Caro and Sveta. Ouch. She is playing doubles with Arantxa.
Daniela's results have been encouraging of late. I imagine that she is anxious to see how things go against the better players rather than the recent bunch of Moe, Larry and Curly. A win over the villainous Vinci would be a very nice start.

This is a tough draw. Vinci is good on clay and has given Daniela tough matches in the past so that won't be easy, although Vinci's form this year hasn't been good, 3 wins against 11 losses. Wozniacki has a great record against Daniela although Daniela thrashed her on clay at Roland Garros and Makarova is a good player as well. The third round opponent would be Kuznetsova, Cornet, Bouchard or Radwanska, all of whom are good players who are playing well this season. This definitely is a case of taking things one match at a time.

Will be happy with a 2nd round...Vinci played quite well in Stuttgart and Oreias so this will be difficult...

Daniela's tweeted that she's playing third, with play starting at 11am. Match is on Sanchez Vicario.

That's confirmed on the WTA Live Scores, and it won't be until after 3:00 PM in Madrid. Which puts the match exactly in the middle of my church services. Dani will have to try to send Vinci Vamoose without me.

I think Vinci will be very very tough, especially on clay. Daniela's got to be so patient and not give away free points as Vinci will slice that backhand to kingdom come. We all saw what happened in Sofia...Daniela will need to beat Vinci and not beat herself...

Vinci is playing incredibly 3-5 :x :x :x :x :x :x

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE SEEN THIS? 4-5 Vinci serving Daniela finally get's a few non consec break points but Vinci holds...

There are so many similar patterns to Daniela's matches it's uncanny. And unbelievably frustrating.

4-6 4-6 Vinci played absolutely amazing, her serve was like rockets..

Daniela played good but not excellent and couldn't convert on all those break points. SUCKS

To be honest I don't know why Lungdren didn't get Daniela to hit more down the middle...anyone agree? Fine to pepper Vinci's backhand but not so much. .

This sucks. Vinci has been terrible this year but she plays great against Daniela. Must have topped up on something.

One thing that's worrying is that Daniela hasn't had a top 20 win since her run here last year, plus she's not had a win at any of the last four mandatory premiers. Daniela really needs a run in Rome because this puts a seeding at Roland Garros at risk. Daniela's resilient and she'll pick herself up and she'll play good tennis again. Hopefully it'll be in Rome and Roland Garros.

This season really does not pick up. Sad sad...

Daniela has not improved her results one bit, sadly. I hope she can somehow find some form (or luck) before the grass, otherwise her ranking will go downhill.

Daniela made Vinci look like Karlovic out there. Return of serve is just not cutting it these days. Yeah eddy,on other clay surfaces the slice BH can be exploited, but on a pretty quick clay court with the ball skidding it wasn't a good idea to play on it all the time.

Church services clearly were spiritually better for me than this would have been. It's a real craw-sticker because not only had Vinci been bad all year until very recently, but I just don't like her.
Daniela truly needs a win over one of the better players for a shot of confidence. I remember 3 years ago, when Dani was playing horribly after really working hard and making some changes in her game in the off season. Out of nowhere she took out Zvonerena in that wacky match in Thailand, and for months after that she knocked off all kinds of big names. Keep hope alive. The points lost this week can be regained in Rome and Paris.

Daniela's doubles match is 4th on what they call Pista 5 tomorrow, following 2 WTA singles events and an ATP singles. Cool that old friend Anabel is one of the opponents.

Post subject:  Re: Mutua Madrid Open, Madrid

I guess Dani will have some time to enjoy Madrid. 3-6 3-6 in doubles....Anabel's revenge. Fell behind 4-0 in the 1st, and after the first point of the 8th game, Anabel's team was 94% 1st serves. It became more competitive after that, and after falling behind 4-1 in the 2nd, then 5-2, Dani and Arantxa saved at least 3 MP's for 5-3, then had 2 break points in the final game. It could have been an incredible comeback. So ends a quick and blah week.
