Very pleasant surprise. And a lovely handshake/kiss between my two faves. Well played Daniela!

:wav: :wav: :jump: We're glad all over! At long last, Daniela Petra-Fied Ms. Kvitova!! And lest we forget...#497!

Worth the wait, guys? Not just the quirky scheduling, but then Kerber and the future Mrs. Ovechkin had to go 3 sets each. But look what a rested, mostly healthy Dani can do!
I was in court all afternoon, able to follow only on the phone. Coming in, I truly did have a good feeling and some hope. Of course, the 1st set mostly erased that. But OMG, to not just come back, but to thrash someone that good who she'd never won even a set from, constantly break her serve (5 times in the last 2 sets), I mean, WOW!! I have to look up the last time Daniela lost the 1st set and won the match against a top 10 player, and I'll go back through my numbers of how many top 10 players she has beaten, because she just added another one!
Now there will be no more long rests this week. Daniela faces Kanepi (who she owes one from Brisbane last year) not before 4:00 PM (10:00 AM where I am) tomorrow. But this feels so good, a lot of recent demons purged. Hey, if this keeps up, maybe Dani can win a tiebreaker!

Daniela now needs to back this up tomorrow against Kaia. A quarter-final here at a mandatory event would be absolutely amazing. Daniela must not think a 3rd round is enough. She could even snatch a seeding for RG if she goes really far here.

Here's a question - if Daniela gets to the very latter stages of Madrid, is she unable to play qualifying in Rome? I guess we'll worry about that if that happens!

Hopefully if that happens, she'll get a WC. Lets not underestimate Kanepi-she has a seriously big game,if a little erratic(rather like Kvitova!).

i have no expectations today, it is great that daniela finally won against kvitova, but i still remember brisbane this year, where she surprised against errani and then lost to tsurenko...and kanepi plays some great tennis on clay...daniela is not consistent nowadays, but i hope she will find it here ;) good luck!

Yeah, I don't have high hopes against Kanepi. She is a huge hitter, but I'm hopeful Eduardo has continued scheming with Daniela into employing tactics other than going for winners (just as she did against Petra).

Not doing great. Lost the first set 6-3.

Making too many mistakes and not doing much at all. Come on Daniela!

Yes poor first set, looks quite flat and tired tbh, also stupid music in the background is distracting her..

Pity she got broken again. Fought hard but Kanepi has too much power. Sadly it is playing out as I thought it would.

She is missing by miles. Don't know why she is trying to outgun Kanepi.

Kanepi takes an injury timeout 2-3 down just as Daniela was getting some momentum. Now of course kanepi is winning again..seriously I swear players do it on purpose against Daniela #SICKENING

Kanepi breaks 4-3 up. Daniela needs to just try and stay out there for as long as possible, if Kanepi really is injured then the longer Daniela keeps her playing the more likely kanepi could start making errors.

It is also annoying Daniela's rhythm can be so easily interrupted. Hope she still fights hard.

Well, that was that...

Well that was disappointing. Daniela's mood swings just kill her in these big tournaments-she went from the perfect attitude yesterday to a frankly awful one today. Kaia has had such an injury-plagued career that a MTO was to be expected.

Off to Rome,I'm sure she will be in a better mood there. :|

OK, I'm the first to admit that this is another act in the long-running hit World Beater One Day/Hard To Swallow Defeat The Next. So Daniela gets a big nemisis yesterday and has the next one created the day after. Phooey. I know we (and she) wanted more after Petra went down. But if we'd been told last Friday that Dani would beat a top 20 and a top 10 player in Madrid and move up 15 or so spots in the rankings, I think we might have signed up for that. Now she gets the chance to get #500 in her favorite city of Rome. That would be nice. :)
