PHEW. Well thank goodness she was able to turn it around. Daniela fitness really helped in the last set. I was so worried 0-2 down in the 3rd set but Lepchenko really wilted. The only thing that was pretty in that match was Daniela's dress. (apart from the amazing back-hand down the line to go 4-2 in the 2nd.) Next up Tsurenko, never heard of her so don't know what to expect... |

That was just a terrible match to watch. Daniela should thank her lucky stars that her opponent just completely imploded in that final set. Much improvement needed. |

The crosscourt backhand angle she hit changing direction near the end of the match was pretty nice as well. She found a way to win, which is what a good player does when they aren't at their best. |

Maalox special? Oh, yeah. Deja vu? Thank heaven, no. Look, here in New York it is very rare that a 1st round match of Dani's is televised live and at a sensible hour, so given that chance tonight, why shouldn't I be treated to quintessential Daniela? Sometimes exceptional, sometimes like she was 5 years old and getting her 1st lesson from her grandmother! Let's consider all the adversity she faced in this match. The wind, the 2 ounce brain in the chair that gave her the time warning, the memory of last year's 1st round loss, and this nobody Lupchenko (who must be the only person that has moved INTO Allentown, Pa. in the last 40 years  ) spending most of the match maintaining a 1st serve win percentage that only Martina or Billie Jean or Suzanne Lenglen would have. Yet she kept cool, perservered, and finally dominated. As much as she was tying knots in my stomach, at love-2 in the third, something told me that Dani would sweep the next 6 games. One tends to come up with crazy thoughts like that watching her over the years! And she goes out and actually does it! Let's all lift our Pepto Bismol bottles in a toast! Let's Go, Daniela!

I watched the match up to *5-4 in the first set (the reason I gave up at that point was a combination of frustration and tiredness as I had work in the morning) and it was a typical Daniela performance up until that point. She got a contensious break in the 4th game when a down the line shot from Lepchenko looked for all the world in but the linesman gave it out, and in the following game Daniela got a code violation for time wasting which seemed to rattle her, she managed to come back from 15-40 down to hold the game, but didn't win another game in that set from there on in, including one at 4-2 where she was 40-0 up on her serve and still conspired to be broken. Daniela, though, pulled it out in the final two sets to get the win, but it was a frustrating set that I witnessed anyway. The main thing is the win and on we go to round two. Scott |

Next up Tsurenko, never heard of her so don't know what to expect... Same here, never heard of her, but she's ranked 111 and is quite a pretty little thing (not that that makes any difference, just pointing it out, and she's not exactly little at 5'9") and looking at her WTA bio she hasn't really done anything outside of the ITF circuit. This should be a straight forward match up for Daniela, but we all know how Daniela loves making us suffer  Scott |

I don't imagine this escaped anyone's attention. Pannetta flamed out last night, and she dropped a bundle of points. Daniela will clearly pass her, and as long as people like Ivanovic and Georges go a long way, the top 20 awaits! Keep our fingers crossed! Geaux, Daniela! |

The weather is not looking good for tomo at all. As MCA doesn't have a roof there may waiting around which is bad for us Europeans as it'll definitely be a really late one! |
