Well it looks like a decent enough start from Daniela; holds her first two service games relatively convincingly and has two aces on the stats board. Leading Dementieva 2-1* on serve.

puh daniela could use a bp to 3-3 :)

Juhu!!! Daniela wins the first set 6-4  who is it, who coaches daniela?

elena wants to see the physio. I also think before that she doesn't look that healthy..maybe because of the different temperatures in paris and dubai? seems to be something with her back

Daniela takes the first set by 6-4 following a double-fault from Dementieva.
The Russian is certainly good at coming back from a set down but at least Daniela has put herself (or has been put) in the best position to attempt to win this match.

Elena retires at 6-4 1-1. Daniela advances to the next round
where she plays Pavlyuchenkova i think.

Going through via a retirement is obviously not as satisfying but I'm sure Daniela will take it (and so will we). You need a bit a luck as well as good performances to go deep into the big tournaments.
She has a great chance of a quarter-final now. Up next is another Russian opponant (her third in a row), Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova; someone Daniela should beat if she plays with confidence and dictates the points.
Even if she loses she's picked up more ranking points this week than I think most of us thought she would so that's something at least.

It's a shame that Daniela won through a retirement and Dementieva wasn't at her best but Daniela did play well, she hit a lot of winners, she controlled a lot of rallies and constructed points. Plus she also moved pretty well. Daniela played a good solid match.
Admittedly Dementieva had had a lot of tough matches in Paris and she was hurt which affected her serve near the end and caused her to retire, but Daniela still played good tennis.

It doesn't feel as good winning on a retirement and it would have been great for Daniela to have won the match point but Daniela played well against Dementieva in Sydney and she also played well here.

Well played Daniela-you should show no mercy to an ailing opponent and she didn't. Good luck in the next round!

Despite the retirement, I'm very happy with todays result. I only caught the last game before Dementieva called it a day, but the commentators on British Eurosport were very complimentary about Daniela's play today, just hope she doesnt drop her play against Pavlyuchenkova in the next round cause a quarter final appearance would be a great effort from Daniela this week in my opinion.

Two upsets so far today. Qualifier Regina Kulikova has just beaten number 2 seed Kuznetsova in three sets 5-7 7-6[2] 6-4 in 3hours 16minutes, and earlier on Shahar Peer knocked out top seed Wozniacki in straight sets (although that's perhaps not as much of a surprise given how well Peer has been playing of late). Top-ten player Li, fourth seed Azarenka, and seventh seed Radwanska are also through to the quarter-finals.

Quarter-final line-up:
PEER v LI
V.WILLIAMS or GOVORTSOVA v PAVLYUCHENKOVA or HANTUCHOVA
ZVONAREVA or JANKOVIC v AZARENKA
A.RADWANSKA v KULIKOVA
