Well, she has played maybe two top 50 players since then, so she hasn't had many opportunities to beat them. Which is understandable as not many higher ranked players participate on the ITF circuit. And there her results have been very good (she's been sweeping her opposition lately), besides I saw her in Budapest playing Cornet not so long ago and she was scary at times hitting winners at will from any position on the court. Cornet grind out a win thanks to her superb defensive play (and accurate fh topspin - it was played on clay), which is something Daniela can't rely on. The reason why the German is ranked so low was a difficult relationship with her former coach, but that is behind her and now she is playing much better. She is a former top 20 and a GS quarterfinalist, and once again tennis is mainly about match ups and Groenefeld isn't a good one for Daniela. It will be tough given Daniela's current form. I will be stunned if she drops less than 11 games and then will claim that I know nothing about tennis. I'll hold you to that. ALG won five games v. Cornet, so how good could she have played? You saw the match, but the scoreline is one-sided. 30-4 sounds impressive until you realize all but one of those tournaments are on clay. And only two of those wins came over players ranked higher than 112. Daniela (or any other top player) would have awesome results against scrub opposition on their favorite surface. For one, Daniela is 17-2 in matches versus players outside the top 100 the last two years (not counting the loss to Davenport who was 294 at the time). The losses were to Sprem (injured and on clay) and to Vinci (no excuses there). In the 17 wins, Daniela lost a total of one set (to Cibulkova). |

Thank you for the doubles draw. Srebotnik-Sugiyama in the second round. Match up issue. Groenefeld is perhaps even more dangerous than Kleybanova and Govortsova, they all play a fairly similar style, having huge serve and groundstrokes. Daniela is gonna have problems to return Groenefeld's serve, while her 2nd serve will be a liability. Besides, Groenefeld is on a roll, confidence sky high. If Daniela wins this it will be a tight 3-setter and she needs to play accurately in order to exploit Groenefeld's poor footwork and movement. I don't see her doing so in current form however. Of course I hope I am wrong and Daniela can raise her level of play because she needs to. I seriously disagree with this. If Groenefeld were as serious of a threat as you claim she is, it would show in her results. It hasn't. She hasn't beat a player in the top fifty in forever (Bartoli at Eastbourne 2006). There's a reason she's ranked where she is. Even after watching Daniela play another sloppy match against Cornet, I'd be stunned if she drops more than eight games to Groenefeld. Everything is possible with Daniela. Last year, Julia Vakulenko hadn't won a match for months before playing against Daniela, and she won. And she won other matches afterwards. Daniela was the beginning of a good period for Julia... |

That's what I mean, everything is possible with Daniela. Who among us expected Daniela lost in the first round last year to someone who kept playing like craps before. And then all of sudden, her opponent played so well and Daniela just kept going downhill throughout the match. I just hope Daniela gets a good preparation this time and plays consistently the whole match. For me, I don't look further than one match at a time with her situation right now. |

Anna Chakvetadze lost in the first round today and lost 448 ranking points with it. (She's my fourth fave). On the plus side, Daniela is guaranteed to move in front of her in the rankings. |

I hate relying upon Groenefeld. Too much tension. |

I guess I will be able to see her playing tonight as Eurosport here tries to show all the match of german players (obviously). Hopefully a performance that we all can be satisfied. According to a poster at GM , Daniela shows off really bad at the practice. I don't know if we can trust him/her for what they say. Well, I am getting more nervous now. |

The stupid EU here is showing T.Haas right now. OK, Daniela is losing the first set. What I was worrying is coming true now. Common Daniela, get yourself together. |
