It's an odd year and Daniela gets to at least the quarter-final here in odd years. A good run here would continue the great form she had in May and June and give her momentum for the hardcourt season. A lot will depend on how fit she is, especially her shoulder.

So she's seeded (at least for the moment).

Danka was seeded till Cibulkova got the WC. So, Daniela is the next (alt) for a seed. What a shame... She could have avoided many dangerous players, like Top 4 seeds before the QF.

The first round is pretty good considering but Shazza in the second round is tough and the quarter-final isn't any easier. Given how well Daniela's been playing no one's going to want to play her and she'll have a lot of confidence as she's beaten the world number one, she beat a nemesis in Ivanovic and beat the Roland Garros champion and Venus in Eastbourne so she'll have lots of confidence. Daniela's not beaten Shazza for a while but she hadn't beaten a lot of other top players for a while or at all but she beat them recently. Still, Daniela has to beat the qualifier first and she's got to focus on that. Hopefully Daniela's fully fit and her shoulder isn't giving her any problems. A good run here will be great and good performances here will give her momentum for the hardcourt season.

Given the strong field, winning one round in an event like this is almost like winning two rounds in some of the other events on the tour. 60 points, a second round, and a competitive match with Maria would be a good enough start to the hard-court season.

True. She got a Q in 1st round which is perfect. Considering who's on FQ round, it will be a training match for Daniela. Just to get use the surface and practise her shots. A r2 claswith h Maria is a very good chance:

1. to play a hard hitter on hard court
2. to test her current fitness condition
3. to play a Top 5 player
4. to beat her after 7 years
5. to meet Rena or Julia on QF

So, I'm really pleased with the draw! But there is no doubles.

Daniela's not playing doubles here so presumably she's wanting to rest and pace herself which is sensible as she'll be playing a lot of tennis over the next few weeks. Daniela's also had some injuries recently and probably doesn't want to put her body under additional stress - you do wonder how her shoulder is though. Agnieszka isn't playing doubles either. Apart from Huber/Raymond and Azarenka/Kirilenko the field isn't that strong and Daniela and Agnieszka would have a great chance here. We'll see if they play together in San Diego.

Daniela will play her first round match on Tuesday and if she wins that, she'd play Shazza on Wednesday night.

Daniela will play Japan's Rika Fujiwara in her first round match. Fujiwara is ranked #191
