MUTUA MADRILENA MASTERS MADRID 2008
QUARTER-FINAL LINE-UP

Nadal [1] v Lopez
Karlovic [14] v Simon
Monfils v Murray [4]
Del Potro [9] v Federer [2]

Some interesting quarter-final matches, particularly Murray v Monfils and Federer v Del Potro.
Looks very likely that Nadal will get to the final as there is no real threat on his side with Djokovic going out to Karlovic.
I think it's a close-call between Murray and Federer on the other side of the draw. Could well be another Nadal v Federer Masters Series final.

With Karlovic's serve he can beat anybody, especially in a best of three sets match. Djokovic had more bps but Karlovic just boomed down a serve to erase them. A lot of Karlovic matches come down to the tiebreak and it's just a couple of points that decide the match and that's what happened against Djokovic. Karlovic beat Federer in Cincinnati without breaking Federer by winning two tiebreaks (that's the only match Federer's lost without being broken) and Nadal only beat Karlovic at Queens after three tough tiebreaks.
Murray's the only player that's able to deal with Karlovic's serve and he'll stand a few metres behind the baseline and get his returns low down at Karlovic's feet.

Gulbis has had so many close matches with top players: Djokovic at Roland Garros, Murray at Queens, Roddick at the US Open and Nadal at Wimbledon and Madrid, but never quite gotten the win. With his talent and more experience he should do really well next year.
You can understand why Berdych shushed the crowd when he beat Nadal here in 2006.

well said chungwit.karlovic's game style breaks my nerves.monsterous serve and ace or poor return coming on net volleying
federer vs delpotro should be good match

You have to hand it to Karlovic for making the most of his, well, one weapon and being a pretty successful player by all accounts. He somehow sits in the top 20 and has been there for a while, if only the rest of the game would just take note from Murray and stand the hell back a bit lol

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Daniela served like Karlovic, she'd be invincible in the WTA.

Simon did well to come back from a break down in the final set to beat Karlovic and he won the tiebreaks easily, but I can't see him doing anything against Nadal.

ROME (AP)—Federico Luzzi, a former top-100 tennis player, has died of leukemia. He was 28.

Luzzi died at a hospital in Arezzo, the Italian Tennis Federation said Saturday. He had been there for a few days after retiring last weekend from an Italian league match citing a high fever.

Luzzi reached a career-high ranking of No. 92 in 2002 before a shoulder injury that affected him the rest of his career.

He had a 2-2 record with Italy’s Davis Cup team. In 2001, Luzzi beat Ville Liukko of Finland 14-12 in the fifth set after 4 hours, 35 minutes—the longest Davis Cup match ever played by an Italian.

In February, Luzzi was suspended for 200 days and fined $50,000 by the ATP for betting on tennis.

Luzzi is survived by his parents, Paola and Maurizio, and his sister, Francesca.
