A great win for Anna Keothavong today - defeated Vania King (wta 93) in three sets, 4-6 6-2 6-3. Two women in the second round of Wimbledon now, after Baltacha's win on Monday. Baltacha will play her second round match tomorrow against Jie Zheng of China (Court 2, 12:00), a player she is capable of beating. Baltacha could see her ranking soar if she gets another win (would become the British number 2 if she were to reach the 3rd round). Keothavong on the other hand has Venus Williams (who put out Cavaday), a much tougher ask which will probably end in defeat. Overall a good performance from the British women in the first two days of the Championships. The three women that went out (O'Brien, South, Cavaday) all lost to seeded players, but put up good fights, especially South and Cavaday. Hopefully a good future ahead for British women's tennis. |

Cavaday did well today i thought. if she becomes a little more fit, she could do wonders! Definately; if she wants to get inside the world's top 100 then she needs to be alot fitter. A good performance today though, especially considering that this was her first appearance on a main show court at a grand slam event. |

Post subject: | Re: The Top Five British Women on the WTA Tour |
Im glad you started this thread asj001, no better time to talk about the British women on the tour that when Wimbledon is on. Unfortunatly due to working I havent been able to watch alot of the championships so far but Ive read up on quite a few matches and also seen some highlights and this is my view on the ladies on tour. Anne Keothavong (92). First of all have to say congratulations to her for her comeback win today. King is like a lot of the players on the tour that are floating around the 50's and so on in the rankings that can always be tricky and the long and short of the matter is that Anne was playing someone ranked higher than her and won so well done for that today. Secondly I would like to congratulate her for getting into the top 100. Anne is the first british women since Sam Smith to reach the top 100 and that was i think over a decade ago so congratulations on that. Her match up against Venus will im afraid be a defeat but it will offer her alot of knowledge and give her an opportunity to see what its like to face the best and what she needs to do to get there Katie O'Brien (127) Katie, a former british number 1, is still very young and i expect her to break the top 100 in the coming years but its not going to be a quick fix and I will take time for her to get up there. Her ranking does allow her to get into top level challengers and some WTA tour events and I think in time she will steadily climb up the rankings. She was unfortunate with her draw at Wimbledon this year drawing Shahar Peer but I dont think she disgraced herself despite losing in straight sets Melanie South (150) Melanie made herself known to the British crowd last year when in the first round of Wimbledon she beat Francesca Schiavone and she definatly has a future, like the other girls on the tour she is a young girl and has many years ahead of her but from what I saw yesterday she has the tools to reach the top 100 and maybe further especially with her powerful ground strokes and serve. Elena Baltacha (158) Elena has been very very unlucky with injuries including a very serious back injury a few years ago. She has shown in the past that she has what it takes to make a good career on the WTA tour reaching the 3rd round at Wimbledon and also reaching the 3rd Round at the Australian Open after coming through qualifying which was a great achievement. One she gets back to match fitness and stops eating pizza (read the BBC article on her match yesterday for that info) and she certainly can get back up there and start fighting to get into the top 100 which she was so close to doing when she got to the last 32 in Melbourne Naomi Cavaday (197) Naomi hasnt had a lot of luck with her two draws at Wimbledon, this year facing defending champion Venus and last year facing former champion and former world number 1 Martina Hingis, although she did have a match point against the swiss miss. Shes, again, is young and she showed glimpses today against Venus that she can go toe to toe with the best in the game and given time she will steadily climb up the ranks but from the low low 100's she will have to be patient and bide her time because its not going to come easily Over all I think British womens is looking rosier than it has done for many many many years and i believe that if these girls put the effort in before and after wimbledon and not just during wimbledon then there is no reason why they all cannot make it into the top 100 and maybe further Scott |

J.Zheng[w] d. E.Baltacha[w] 6-2 7-5 A shame that Baltacha went down so easily in the second set in the end. She led by a break twice (at 3-2 and 5-4) but lost the last three games of the match, two of which were her service games, and will now have to head back to the ITF circuit to get her ranking up. She will however gain 58 points from making the second round here which will help her ranking a little, getting her up to around the 136 mark (a leap of about 20 places). |

J.Zheng[w] d. E.Baltacha[w] 6-2 7-5 Disappointing result for Baltacha today and by the sounds of it she just wasnt at the races today and deserved to lose. This is the problem with the British girls especially at Wimbledon they can go into their first round matches and ride on a crest of wave and then once they win the expectations start coming and they falter, if the 5 girls that have been mentioned above want to crack the top 100 and go further up the rankings they will need to string results together. Baltacha though I think will be strong despite this defeat and she will be determined to work hard and improve on her game after the injuries that she has had that have hampered her career Scott |

Yea the British girls are gettting better. Slow but shurely. I was really amazed at Cavaday's performance against Venus. Gave her a real scare with some help from a wasp |

V.Williams[7] d. A.Keothavong 7-5 6-2 Anne recovered well in the first set after going 2-0 down to get the score to 2-2, and had chances for 3-2 but couldn't maintain the high level of play needed to take the game. At 3-3 she missed 8 break point opportunities to take a 4-3 lead, and in the end Venus had too much game and Anne couldn't maintain the high-level of play required to beat her on her best surface. In the second set Venus kept her focus and won relatively easily but it was a great effort from Anne and a good match overall that lasted 1 hour 44 minutes (1st set lasted over an hour illustrating how competitive each game was). Keothavong will gain 58 points, like Baltacha, and this will move her up the rankings to around the low 80's. So overall a successful week for the British number 1. Nice also to hear the commentators say that she definately has the ability to play regularly in the higher level tournaments (i.e. WTA tour tier III's and IV's) |

Its time like these when I really really wish I didnt have a job, Ive missed so much of Wimbledon this year already so I cant really leave to much of a comment on this match but from what Ive read and what Ive been told it was a good effort from Anne and much like Eaton and Tursunov, I hope she can build on this experience and continue her climb up the rankings, shes done the hard part of cracking the top 100, now its time to push on Scott |

Post subject: | Re: British Women on Tour....and Laura Robson |
Just want to say congratulations to Laura Robson for reaching the girls singles final, the first british girl to reach the final since Anabel Croft and made even more of an achievement when you consider that Robson is only 14 years of age, and on her way to the final she beat the number 1 seed. Her post match interview with the BBC was so refreshing, especially when she said she wants to take Marat Safin to the players ball and hasnt figured out her 'game plan' of how to ask him lol for a 14 year old she is very down to earth considering all the attention in the press she has been getting The BBC naturally have talked a lot about her recently and when you consider the lack of top quality talent in British womens tennis you have to hold onto every bright light and at such a tender age you can only think that she will be a star of the future. Good luck in the final Laura, ill sure be watching. Scott |
