Should be an interesting tournament, and will be a good indicator as to how well some of the African teams will do in the World Cup later in the year. African football has improved immensely in recent years so should bring some decent entertainment all round Scott |

Not the best thing to hear just before a major tournament. Not the best thing to hear at any point. Twice now sports teams have been gunned down in less than 12 months. Togo footballers shot in ambush Togo football stars tell of gun attack Attacked Togo stars may quit Africa Cup of Nations Scott |

The gun attack on the Togo team was absolutely horrifying and three people are dead. Togo have withdrawn from the tournament. It's just a terrible act of violence, whether targeted or random. A good article that gives some background to the situation in the Angolan enclave of Cabinda where the attack took place: |

Mali came back from 4-0 down in the 78th minute to draw 4-4, including two goals at the end of injury time to draw 4-4 with Angola ![]() |

Despite what happened pre tournament its all gone off with a bang with the 4-4 draw between Angola and Mali, then the surprise 0-0 draw between Ivory Coast and Burkino Faso as well as the u-turn by the Togo national team after withdrawing from the competition, and then asking to enter again. Im not normally bothered about this tournament overly but if it continues to have this much drama then I may need to watch it a bit more. Scott |

Picture 13.png Quarter-finals: Angola V Ghana Cote d'Ivoire V Algeria Egypt V Cameroon Zambia V Nigeria With H2H counting over goal difference, there wasn't any incentive for Angola or Algeria to do anything other than play out a 0-0 draw in their game as that would take them both through even though Mali had a better goal difference than Algeria but had lost to Algeria. Still, a lot of entertaining games in the group stages and some good matches to come. |

Quarter-finals: Angola 0-1 Ghana Cote d'Ivoire 2-3 Algeria (AET) Egypt 3-1 Cameroon (AET) Zambia 0-0 Nigeria. Nigeria won 5-4 on penalties. Some of the refereeing decisions were pretty bad. Cote d'Ivoire had an equaliser disallowed for offside when Toure was clearly onside in extra time injury time. Cote d'Ivoire went 2-1 up in the last minute but Algeria equalised in injury time and went ahead at the start of extra time before. Egypt had a goal given to them when the ball bounced on the line. Egypt were the better side and were 2-1 up at the time but it always helps to be given a goal. Semi-finals: Ghana v Nigeria Algeria v Egypt. Algeria v Egypt should be fairly interesting after what happened between them in World Cup qualifying. |

I watched the extra time period of this game and could not believe how poor a decision was given for Toure's disallowed goal. The linesman was in a perfect position as well and I could see two players playing him onside. Poor, poor decision and annoying even more for me as it means that two big Premier league players are back earlier than I'd hoped. Scott |

Final: Egypt 1-0 Ghana. Egypt win their third consecutive title and seventh overall. It's astonishing how dominant Egypt are in the Cup of Nations but that their last World Cup qualification was in 1990. 3rd place: Nigeria 1-0 Algeria. Togo have been banned from the next two Cup of Nations after withdrawing following the gun attack on their team bus. Something that just defies belief. |

The fact that CAF would allow them back in the tournament after what happened was bad enough, but this decision just seems ridiculous beyond measure. They had every right to take a few days to console themselves and there was no way that they were going to be able to participate in their first match against Ghana so to ban them for essentially four years is amazing. Zambia won this year in Gabon after beating Ivory Coast 8-7 on penalties. They've won 19 years after the entire team was killed in a plane crash in Gabon. |
