Result - Wednesday 13th May 2009 Wigan Athletic 1 vs 2 Manchester United Rodallega 28'; Tevez 61', Carrick 86' It's been 17 hours, but I'm still struggling to come up with anything to say about this slumped haystack of a match. I watched it grimly, out of a sense of duty to what's turning out to be a maddeningly incremental historic moment—Manchester United are now "all but guaranteed" to win the title they'd "essentially sewed up" a few weeks ago and "basically won" in March—but as it turned out I wasn't the grimmest thing in the room. Has any team ever endured its way to a championship with as much dogged moroseness as Manchester United this year? Wigan were great, apart from being Wigan, but watching Man Utd at the moment is like watching an old man cut the grass with an antique lawnmower. The grass can't do anything about it, but it takes forever, and no one has any fun. - Manchester United forced their way to glory with the ineluctable certainty of a rural vet's fist retrieving a calf. We must now be resourceful in truffling out narratives – "Oooooh, Wenger might go to Madrid." He probably won't. "Tevez might go to Anfield." He probably won't. The only claim that can be made with any confidence is that Manchester United will win things. In all seriousness, what joy is to be had by following this ruthless footballing machine? There would surely be more tension and suspense in supporting the Terminator as he beat up ducklings in a garage – "Show no mercy, one of 'em's getting away. Stamp on it before it grows up into a swan – they can be vicious." - Russell Brand |
