Daniela might have just watched the ceremony on television.
As for her first-round match-up, ANYTHING could happen. As we all know, unpredictability and these two players go hand-in-hand... |

Cibulkova and Errani both played very well today. Errani's excellent results in singles and doubles this year (she is ranked 5 in the world for 2012 in terms of prize money) have clearly brought much confidence, and she has the recent memory of a quarter-final run in Melbourne. Cibulkova in comparis... |

Women's top seed and world number 1 out, and men's top seed and world number 1 two-sets down. Would be huge if Djokovic went out today as well.
And I think it seems you're agreeing with me that Venus was below par, which is really at the crux of this discussion and the match result. |

Yes, Agnieszka has beaten a below-par Venus on two occasions this year. And on those two occasions it was widely acknowledged that she had been the better player on the day. |

Yes, she has an ego, but Serena has done much for women’s tennis over the past 14 years and she contributes immensely to the wider spectacle of tennis, and sport. So many players do not see the bigger picture, and do not put the game into a wider context. I think Serena does that brilliantly. As for... |

Slightly deceptive from the BBC. Serena didn't actually say "I'm in amazing form", although I'd imagine she thought she was, and of course everyone else thought she was too. But I see where you're coming from... It was a nervous match from Serena today, unlike her performances in Charlesto... |

Virginie did very well to stay focused after losing a second point for hindrance which put her break point down serving at 5-3 in the final set. Many other players would have faltered there and dropped serve. I think that last game ended up being around 20 minutes in length. Superb match, with Virgi... |

I'd imagine Daniela will withdraw from Brussels as well, and Roland Garros is no certainty. Her best chances are in Birmingham, Eastbourne, and Wimbledon (for The Championships and the Olympics), and I expect she wants to be 100% fit for these events. |

Solid match from Daniela, into the quarter-finals and meeting the unexpected Julia Goerges there. This makes Daniela's win against Hercog a little sweeter, since if she'd have lost that one it would have now seemed like a real missed opportunity. As it is, Daniela has a decent shot at a semi-final p... |

Kirilenko d. Cirstea 6-2 5-7 6-4
Daniela leading Hsieh *2-1. A quick, two-set win here would be ideal. |

Semi-final line-up:
Cirstea [7] v Kirilenko [4] Hantuchova [3] v Hsieh [Q]
Daniela has a good shot at defending a title for the first time in her career. |

Draw continues to open up. Qualifier Hsieh has beaten Mirza in the bottom half, and in the top half Cirstea has beaten top-seed Zvonareva by retirement in the third set. |

Three Brits in the draw (and none of them via wildcard )
Daniela should certainly get to the latter stages of this week, and defending her title is possible if she plays well and has some good breaks with the draw. |
