It's good that Daniela's seeded here as she avoids the top players and should have a decent opener. However, there are still a lot of dangerous floaters out there and Barty and Tomljanovic aren't seeded so Daniela can't overlook anyone and has to respect any opponent. Hopefully she can get a decent draw and at least win her first match and go on a run. She could do with a run as she's quite a lot of points away from the top 30 while the players below her are very close to her points tally. Plus, it's a Slam and these are the tournaments you want to do well at.

We just have to take things one match at a time and hopefully Daniela's fully fit and able to play her best tennis here.

Seriously I just want Daniela to win at least one match, I can't deal with another 1st round loss at a Grand Slam.

1R Qualifier
2R Parmentier/K.Pliskova
3R Serena(1)

3rd round is the goal but like I said one match win here is good enough for me.

Daniela's got a qualifier in the first round and she's got either Parmentier or Karolina Pliskova in the second round. If Daniela gets to the third round then she'd play Serena Williams.

We'll see who the qualifier is first and that could be tough. Parmentier beat Daniela at the US Open in 2011 and Pliskova gave Daniela a really tough match in Dubai last year and we all know about Serena Williams, although Daniela won the last time they played at the Australian Open, 3rd round if I remember. Daniela just has to focus on getting past the first round and she has to take each match as it comes.

Going back, the record shows that since her double bagel 1st rounder in Carlsbad, Daniela has lost 7 of her last 9 opening matches, 3 of them to qualifiers. Scary. Yet, in the other two events (New York and Moscow), she beat 2 qualifiers at US Open (2nd and 3rd round) and a 1st round one in Russia. So while facing a Q in the 1st round in Melbourne is somewhat disconcerting, Dani has had recent runs fueled in part by knocking a Q off in an early round. I have had a weirdly good feeling about the AO for weeks now; hoping Daniela feels good and has nothing but positive vibes. She won AO opening matches over qualifiers in 2007 and 2 years ago, and lost last year. And, guys, consider this: Lifetime, Daniela is 1-0 in Melbourne against Serena! :o

Let's Go, Daniela!

In the doubles semis in Hobart, Raymond and Zheng blew a 6-1 super tiebreak lead and lost. I would like to think that it's good for Raymond to have that out of her system.

Daniela plays Heather Watson 11am (1st match on court 2) on Monday. I am British but am supporting Daniela all the way as Heather has many more years to shine. I think Daniela is going to struggle though as Heather has been playing VERY well in Australia. She came through qualifying in Brisbane and this week has been solid on AO qualies. Heather's serve is on fire and also gets so many balls back.

Daniela needs to be ready and bring her A game and most of all cut down on errors and double faults.

Watson was the qualifier that I wanted Daniela to avoid. She's a much better player than her ranking as she won the Junior US Open a few years back and was top 50 before getting sick last year and going down the rankings. Like eddy said, Watson been playing well in Australia and she gets so many balls back and grinds a lot so Daniela will have to minimise the errors. Watson gave CIbulkova a tough match in Brisbane. I think this is going to be a very tough match. Even when Daniela gets a qualifier she always seems to get a tough one.

Yeah, this isn't the player I would have picked for Dani to open with, either. But I shall hold to the optimism I have felt about Melbourne for awhile. One difference between this and the usual situation Daniela faces with qualifiers is that there's a day off, instead of the Q rolling into the match the next day with all her momentum. Hey, one of these days Daniela will come out firing on all cylinders and the qualie will play like crap. Never give up on the good times!

On one of those sites that projects day after day what will happen to a ranking, it says that the lowest Daniela would fall with the dreaded first round loss is #44. A first round win gets her into the high 20's. And, dare I say should Dani win the whole thing, she would rank between 14 and (drum roll, please) ……10!

Let's Go, Daniela!

WOHOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally Australia this year wasn't a complete waste of time.

She plays Kateryna Pliskova next which will be much tougher.

Not sure what Daniela can take from that other than she still has her fighting spirit. Some of her play was awful and some good parts. I actually think she played worse than in Sydney for most of the match but she fought more here.

In other news Venus lost so always very happy when a Williams sister loses, especially on a day Daniela wins. Sorry but I can't stand the Williams sisters. Let's hope Serena bombs out before 3rd round too.
