I keep feeling that Daniela's due a good draw sometime but she always gets a tough first round. This is the toughest run of draws she's had in her career as everyone she's played in the US Open series has been in the top 30 and she had top 30 opponents in Rome and Madrid. Most years she's been seeded so got decent draws, although she actually had quite tough draws in the 2002 US Open series, but even in years that she wasn't she generally got decent openers. In 2004 she was ranked lower than she is now but the highest ranked player she played in a first round during the hardcourt was Loit at 36 and her opening rounds last year were fairly reasonable.

I don't think she'll be seeded and given the way that recent draws have gone I'm not going to get my hopes up. Regardless of who she gets Daniela will have to be up for the match and play well because there are a lot of good players in the field.

I don't know if it's just coincidence but last year Daniela skipped New Haven and got to the fourth round of the US Open while the previous couple of years she played here and went out in the first round at the US Open and the last year she had good runs at both New Haven and the US Open was 2005.

Still, Darren Cahill should be here so we'll see what he can do.

Its not an easier draw, but quite acceptable...for this tournament.. Kanepi is a ball buster :/ But shes not that consistent(Well Daniela is not, too), but I hope daniela will take her down!

But Schiavone will be a challenge :/ Oh, hope Daniela will do something....

She needs some wins before US Open!

Come on!

This is a reasonable enough draw, at least compared to what Daniela's been getting.

Kanepi's come into a bit of form lately and she had a good run at Wimbledon, won Palermo and beat Peer in Montreal so she'll be confident. If she's on and blasting winners she'll be tough but Daniela has more variety and Kanepi's not a great mover. It's going to be important to get the first strike in and dictate the rallies.

A repeat of Monterey would be great.

True. It will be tough. Kanepi had some good runs since then...

Hopefully Kanepi will lack a bit of confidence from her match against Kim. But this match is definitely winnable for Daniela.

2nd round is tough whatever happens...kinda hoping the Schiavone will beat Safina again...

A quarter-final appearance would be very acceptable.

true, Kanepi played horribly. During the match I wondered how on earth she could have beaten Peer. Let's hope she keeps this level against Daniela :D

Sad for Serena, but to me it makes the US Open a lot more interesting. Although a re-match of last year's semifinal would have been great.

We'll see how Daniela does at the US Open. A lot will depend on the draw and if she gets a decent draw then she can do well. You look at some recent slam semi-finalists and they mostly got lucky with the draw or got hot at the right time. Wickmayer was ranked in the 50s last year but the only seed she played until the semi was Razzano, the highest ranked player Zheng beat at the Australian Open was Bartoli and Kvitova and Pironkova both got to the Wimbledon semis.

It's also important that Daniela goes into the US Open with confidence and momentum so this is an important match for Daniela. A win and a good performance would do her so much good and also give her the chance to go on a run and get some points. We do have to take this one match at a time and she has to beat Kanepi. The US Open is the only tournament where Daniela has a lot of points to defend for the rest of this year so good runs in the other tournaments would boost her ranking.

New Haven, Conn., Scrambles to Keep Tennis Stop
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: August 21, 2010

Filed at 9:39 a.m. ET

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Some of the top players in tennis are heading to Yale this week for the final tournament before the U.S. Open -- along with representatives of about a half-dozen companies being wooed in an effort to keep the event alive.

Pilot Pen is dropping its $2 million sponsorship -- and name -- from the New Haven tournament after 14 years, citing the poor economy. Leaders of the tournament, which begins Sunday, are now anxiously courting replacements and hoping this year won't be its last.

''We've gotten a lot of excitement and a lot of good feedback, but in this economy companies are just not expanding their sports portfolio,'' tournament director Anne Worcester said. ''We've gotten so close with some big international brands. But it's got to be the right time, right place, and it's got to fit in with their strategy.''

Pilot Pen is one of just four tournaments sanctioned by both the men's ATP Tour and the women's WTA Tour. The tournament must let the owners, the United States Tennis Association, know whether it will continue leasing both sanctions or ''hand back the keys by the end of September,'' Worcester said.
