The conditions are awful, extremely windy. Very bad gusts.

Saved 6 break points, but eventually was broken to 0-2. :(

Daniela is once again having an incredibly difficult time on her second serve; winning just 31% of points there so far. Vinci is not Pavlyuchenkova; capable of blasting consistent winners off of mediocre second serve.

I'd like to say the wind was a factor, but both players have to deal with it. I think that was a crucial game she needed to hold; especially if she was able to claw her way back from 0-40 and then save additional break points. It would have done wonders for her confidence. BOOOO!

Match isn't over, but it's really not looking good at all.

And.. she's making little or no impact on Vinci's serve as well! Has not had a break point since the second game of the first set. :(
Edit: Gee... way to prove me wrong! Great fight back from 40-0 down on Vinci's serve!

What is your favorite book? Or, Israel
Hmmm... there are so many... this is a tough one! The last good one I read was The Alchemist.

That's my all-time favourite book. It's by Paulo Coelho and it is stunningly inspirational.

Same for both players, can't blame the wind.

Daniela serving at 4-5 to stay in the match. . .
Easy hold, 5-5 now.
Daniela had a break point on second serve but couldn't convert. Must hold again now.

That was horrid! Back to square one AGAIN!

The only positives I can gain from this is that she showed some fight clawing her way back in that second set, though who knows if it was due to Vinci's errors rather than Daniela's play. At least she won't get thrashed by Wickmayer in the next round, but that's such a petty consolation prize!

When will the tables finally turn for Daniela, and us fans?!?!?!

Perhaps now the penny will drop. She can't go on playing the way she is currently.

Although I expected Daniela to win this one I had felt concerned for her for this opening match all week. Alot of the seeds have struggled because of the poor conditions and the fact that their opponants have already played a match and so are more adept in them. I would rather the byes just got to the top-8 or top-16, but I suppose this speeds the tournament up a little. Bad luck for Daniela. Vinci can always throw in a surprise (as she did in Tokyo - at the start of one of Daniela's best ever seasons - so perhaps there is more to come from Dani yet).

Its a shame because she'll lose alot of the points that she gained last week by playing in Monterrey, and her ranking will pretty much go back to what it was before. Maybe she should have avoided Monterrey and trained for longer in Indian Wells in order to get used to the conditions.

Poor Daniela-wrenched her back out during the afternoon warmup, which is typical of the rotten luck she has had throughout her career. She really shouldn't have taken to the court at all,I take back my earlier criticism.

I'm afraid this will plague her for the rest of her career, speaking as someone who has a chronic back condition.

Daniela's Indian Wells Blog Saturday, March 13, 2010

What can I say... it was a tough loss today. During my warm-up in the afternoon I injured my back a little bit and had an hour of work done on it before the match, taping it up... it didn't feel right. It was windy and quite cold, not the best conditions for an injury, but it was the same for both of us, and that doesn't take anything away from the fact Roberta played well. And she played really well. That's tennis: one day everything goes your way, the next it's just not your day.

I had my chances in the second set. I was down 63 30 and almost got it back to a tie-break in the second set... Even though it wasn't easy, I kept believing until the end. It almost worked out, just a few balls here and there. The crowd was trying to pull me through it, which I appreciate a lot, because I think it was so cold that everyone probably just wanted to go home!

I'll get some treatment on it over the next few days, take it easy and try to recover as fast as I can. It's all about getting it right and healthy now.

I'll be here tomorrow and will talk to you all then :)

Daniela

Do you still have time to play the piano? Mikko, Finland
Right now I don't have too much time to play, but whenever I can I do. I like playing songs I hear on the radio... When I was younger I attended music school for eight years and was playing more classical, like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach... it was nice because it was very challenging. It taught me a lot.

If you could play doubles with anyone in history, who would it be? Tom
In history... wow, that's a tough one. Gotta be Roger or Rafa. I'd ask them but I think they are way too focused on their singles. They do play best of five!

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.
