No susprise here, Kuznetsova is a different class on this surface. Daniela managed to get quite a respectable scoreline. In 2007 when she was playing much better she lost to the same opponent at the same tournament 6-4 6-2.

Yes, as expected. Peak Daniela was never all that competitive against top players on clay. As I think I said last week, I'm more optimistic about Daniela than I have been in quite a while, but that we will have to wait until the grass courts come along to see that manifest itself in wins and losses. She won't be seeded at Madrid and very likely not at RG, so the next couple of weeks will be tough. Provided she beats the Dushevinas of the world and hangs in there against the better players, again I really do like her chances once grass and US hardcourts come around.

Yep, she definitely looks much better than she did a couple of months ago. Unfortunately she's also getting much tougher draws these weeks.

The (rather short) grass court season could be a peak for Daniela this year. I think if she plays as she has the past couple of weeks and better then she has a good shot in the couple of tournaments before Wimbledon (that normally don't boast the top names such as the Williams', Dementieva, Jankovic etc). I really hope she plays Birmingham because last year it had a very weak field and if the same applies this year then Daniela would have a real shot at going deep (i.e. semi-final or further), which would give her great confidence for Wimbledon.

Off topic, I have heard that Zvonareva's recovery could take as long as 12 weeks, which would severly affect her ranking. Of course thats the worst case scenario but right now I can't see her playing Roland Garros; she'll probably just make it back in time for Wimbledon. In my oppinion she got very lucky during the second-half of 2008 due to other top players under-performing or being absent from tournaments that she did well at, and that pushed her up the rankings to her high of 5 this year. She isn't a main-stay top-five player in my oppinion, and although no one deserves to get injured, this has certiainly 'corrected' the rankings in that Venus Williams has now taken the number 5 spot.

Well, the scoreline isn't terrible, so it looks like she wasn't totally outclassed. I think i expected something a bit closer though... Oh well.

I keep forgetting that Daniela just isn't as strong on clay. Or as formidable as she is on other surfaces. I'm in the same boat as everyone else: looking forward to a solid grass and (2nd) hard court season.

Hantuchova and Sugiyama are *5-1 up against Brianti and Dentoni. Hopefully this will turn into another doubles win and put them into a WTA Premier event quarter-final for the first time this year.

Great win from Daniela and Ai. There'll play the number four seeds Llagostera Vives and Martinez Sanchez in the semi-finals. If they beat them then they would be the favourites to win the title, with a lower seeded team and an unseeded team in the other half of the draw. Hsieh and Peng are doing fairly well as a team this year though, so its no guarenteed win for Daniela and Ai. First though, its the Spaniards, and of course they're more than competent on the red clay.
