It seems like Daniela will just get into qualifying. It's difficult to predict how Daniela will do here as she hasn't played since she retired injured in Taiwan and she didn't qualify for either Linz or Luxembourg although she beat Davis in Linz and Davis just won Auckland and Daniela also had a good win against Van Uytvanck in Luxembourg. Hopefully Daniela's fully fit and not too rusty and she's able to do herself justice. I don't know how many more chances Daniela will get to play in the Australian Open so it would be wonderful for her to do well here.

Daniela stars with Natalia Vikhlyantseva of Russia who is the no. 13 seed ranked 130. Her form at the end of last year is pretty good as she got to the final of the Dubai ITF beating Daniela's Luxembourg conqueror Moore along the way, she also got to the semi-final of the 125K in Limoges beating Dodin and taking Caroline Garcia to the third set tiebreak and she also won there St Petersburg ITF in September and Plzen on clay in August. Vikhlyantseva will be feeling confident and this is quite a tough owner for Daniela. However, Vikhlyantseva is young and has mostly played on the ITF circuit. This will be only her second time at a Grand Slam and she lost in the first round of qualifying for the US Open to Alize Lim after winning the first set 6-0. She also lost in the first round of Moscow qualifying to Nicole Gibbs, so there could be nerves at this level. Her best main tour result was qualifying for S'hertogenbosch before losing to Mladenovic in three sets in the second sound. This seems like a tough match but Daniela will have a huge advantage in experience so hopefully she's fit and prepared and is able to do herself justice.

Lost 1-6 3-6.

Serve still a real issue,as she was broken 5 times. The last minute travelling to australia probably didn't do her any favours either.

This was complete slaughter, Vihklyantseva had the advantage in pretty much every aspect of the game. Her serve was better, she hit more winners and her shots were more powerful. Vikhlyantseva's serves were about 20 kmh faster than Daniela's.

Daniela actually started that match pretty well as she broke in the first game but then Vikhlyantseva breezed through the rest of the set although Daniela had a BP in the fifth game. She never got past 30 on her own serve in the first set.

Daniela had chances at the start of the second set as she saved a BP to hold in the first game, she had 7 GPs in the third game but got broken and 3 BPs in the next game but couldn't break back. Daniela was 1-3 down when she could have been 3-1 up with momentum which would have challenged Vikhlyantseva. After that Vihklyantseva held both times to love so Daniela never had another chance to get back into the match The fifth game was another tough one for Daniela as she won it on her fifth GP although she held to love in the seventh game.

I just wonder how much longer Daniela will keep going because getting beaten like this must be very difficult for her. We'll see if she plays doubles or not, I think she might as well because she can play and win some matches and I don't know if she's going to get the chance to play here again.

This was discouraging only from the perspective that it's hard to figure out, as it has been from the last couple of years, what Daniela can do to overcome the young bombers that serve it 10-15 MPH harder that she does. Yet today she had 7 missed BP's, so she got to the verge of breaking a sizzling server several times, and several of the games were marathon length, meaning the fight in her is certainly still there. Plus, I would like to know if Court 7 had to be thoroughly swept and cleaned after the match to dispose of all the rust Daniela shed onto it!

I looked it up and found that Dani's 1st ever tourney was an ITF in Bratislava in 1998. Ergo, she has now played in at least one professional tournament in 20 separate calendar years. Let's take a while to savor this, an absolutely phenominal and remarkable achievement. :)
