We'll see how Daniela does here. She has a lot of points to defend from last year so she has to do well here but the field is quite strong. Daniela is good on grass but she'd still be the underdog against most of the other players there and it's been so long since she's had a main draw win. We'll see how she does and this is somewhere new for her. The draw is going to be tomorrow so we'll see who Daniela has to play.

Draw's out and Daniela plays Yaroslavl Shvedova in the first round which is a pretty decent draw. Shvedova's ranked 94 and her last win was in Charleston and she's lost in the first round of her last five tournaments, four on clay and in s-Hertogenbosch to Mladenovic, so she's not in great form and her confidence won't be too high. At the same time it's been 11 months since Daniela last had a main draw win so Shvedova will probably be fairly happy with the draw too. The winner plays either fifth seed Putintseva or a qualifier. It's a decent draw where Daniela at least has a chance for a win.

When Daniela was broken to start the match. I told myself "Come on! She is gonna lose until the end of her career. :'("

BUT SHE PROVED ME WRONG AND GOT THE NEXT SIX GAMES TO WIN THE 1ST SET!!! PLUS 3 ACES!!! :o

:wav: :wav: :wav: :wav: A really good win by Daniela. It feels so good for her to get a main draw win again. Admittedly, Shvedova really helped Daniela out by making errors but Daniela was solid and kept the pressure up. I've got to admit that I got a little nervous when Shvedova got back to 3-3 in the second after Daniela was 3-1 up because she played well in those two games but Daniela was able to get the break to go 4-3 up and that seemed to break Shvedova's resistance. Daniela got the job done from then.

This feels so good :D :D

Even more so for me. It's my birthday! Thank you so much, Daniela! :!: :!:

I picked it up after the opening game where Dani was broken. After the requisite not again/this is never a good sign/why do I keep doing this to myself, the next game may have been the turning point. Shvedova, while achieving one fault after the other, was able to get to 15-40. She had 4 game points in all here. Daniela fought them all off and got the break back, which started her on a 6 game run for the set. As you said, Chungwit, there was the obligatory Maalox Moment at 3-3 in the second. A very nice job by our gal to keep it together and polish off the match. How do you like 6 aces?

Daniela plays either Cirstea or Putintseva in the next round and they both had good clay seasons so both of them have better form and more confidence than Shvedova had. It'll be a tough match but I'm sure that getting a main draw win will be a boost for Daniela's confidence.

Cirstea won with ease. Daniela is 2-1 lifetime, with their last meeting happening in 2011in Birmingham, where Dani thrashed her 6-0 6-3. That was their only match together on grass. Here's hoping. A win would prevent a deep drop in the ranking.
