plus I think the 2008 Indian Wells QF showed that Daniela has got the game to beat Maria, just not the nerves/mentalityThat's been my point all along-apart from the Wimbledon match where she got absolutely chopped, she always has oppurtunities and fails to take them. The Zurich match was very interesting,as she had a bad rib injury, yet managed to win a set, presumably because she wasn't putting so much pressure on herself.

I would agree with Benji in the sense that I only gave Daniela a chance against Maria this week because of the troubles that Sharapova has had over the past year or so. Once Maria is back to her competitive best it will be the same old story - tight matches, but Maria coming through in the end.

Yes its too late to switch the draw around now. If only Radwanska had pulled out today instead of yesterday then Zheng wouldn't be in the same section as Daniela.
With Wozniacki's withdrawel the draw is opening up very nicely for Sharapova (who is thrashing Garbin; leading 6-1 *2-0).

I don't understand this. According to Danish newspaper, Caro withdrew or decided to do so before the draw was out. Late withdrawals like this messes everything up

Ye I agree. It's very annoying because if both Radwanska and Wozniacki (the top-two seeds!) had withdrawn before the draw was made then the draw would have probably looked very different. Instead they are going to have to have a lucky loser in the position of the top seed.

Don't know about you, guys, but I don't think Zheng is such a great claycourter, flat shots and all that. I wouldn't be surprised if she lost prior to QF.

No longer a thrashing.. at 2 .5 hours into match, it nis now 6-1 7-6 3-3

...Sharapova wins -- 6-1 7-6 6-3

Sharapova broke twice during the last three games of the match to take the final set 6-3, and reach the second round where she'll play one of the two qualifiers/lucky losers from the top of the draw.

Is this since seeing her three set win over Govortsova today?

Anyone that can seriously challenge the Safina of present is most likely to be very adept on clay. Flat shots with lots of pace can be enough in the women's game on clay, as long as the player is consistent.
